Wild Rice Harvest

A friend of mine and I were able to get out ricing for about 3 hours today. We ended up with about 50-60 pounds of wild rice. All said and done after it gets parched, and winnowed, we'll each end up with about 10-15 pounds of wild rice. I'm hoping to get out again a few more times. Has anyone else ever gone "ricing"

No pictures, but I'll have to be sure to take some the next time I go. It's a lot of work, but it's also rewarding.

Basically you have two people in a canoe. One of them will pole through the rice which is oftentimes over your head in height. The other person is kneeling in front of him, and uses two beaters (1 inch width/30 inch long poles) to bring the rice over the canoe. They will then hit the rice heads, and the ripe rice will fall into the bottom of the canoe.

i've seen this on tv before and always thought it would be great to be in an area where i was able to this! I love picking "wild" foods, mushrooms, berries....etc.

Only "ricing" I've ever done is old school Japanese style rice paddy ricing. I'll throw some pics up if you want.

This sounds much cooler though!

Closest I've come to that is riding a rice burner.

Sounds amazing.

Just caught this thread and I'm jealous!

I grew up in Michigan until I was 14. We fished, hunted, hiked or camped almost every weekend, sun or snow, and never heard of ricing. I'm gonna have to call my Dad about this one!

This does sound really neat. I bet that will be the most delicious rice you've ever tasted.

I came home from work a few weeks ago to find 2 fresh baked apple pies. Cut me a big slice and it was the best apple pie i've ever tasted. The roommate that baked them then told me he "walked down the street to that apple tree" and picked them. I was astonished! The neighborhood apple tree supplied us with 2 amazing pies!

I was able to get out again. I wasn't able to get pictures again, but I did end up with 23 pounds of wild rice. I made some wild rice bread with it this weekend. Mmm, Good!
