Wicked case of razor burn from a...Feather?

I decided to use a Feather blade in conjunction with my MB Frankincense and Myrrh soap (which is quite good I must admit). I did my normal routine-shower, brush soaked in hot water, hot water towel on my face (minute-minute & a half), great lather, no pressure, great angle (I could see the hairs being cut but could not feel it), repeat for wtg, xtg, atg, tu. I had several weepers after the last pass (tu). I soaked my towel in cold water to hold on my neck, the location of the burn. I took my styptic pencil, wet it with cold water (seems to feel better when applied) and applied. Ah caramba (just because four letter expletives are un-gentlemanly and unnecessary on this site)! The sting was so overwhelming my hand was twitching! I added the cold towel again and then quickly dosed the fire with good ole Aqua Velva. Looking in the mirror afterwords shows my lower neck area to be bright red. The good news is the bleeding stopped almost instantly after applying the AV and the blade did not come with much glue on it (I really hate blades with glue).

Now the $64,000 question-where, what why and how did I go wrong to get such a burn? I even corked the blade before I started shaving.

I'll be so happy when I find the blade that works for me (still have quite of few to try out from my sample pack).

I had the same response when I did XTG on my lower neck. It's fine WTG and ATG, so now I leave out the XTG pass and everything's fine.

could have been a technique issue - bad blades are also not entirely unheard of, this one may have slipped through QC

+2 to what Dunny says.
It could be a blade.
From what I've seen, razor burn is bad blade ANGLE 9 times out of 10.
It's fairly easy to get that angle right on a flat area like a cheek, much harder to keep it right on wierd angles like a neck, especially when going in a different direction, like ATG.

Good Luck

Ya'll probably right about the angle. I really hate the contours on my neck. I'm going to try it again moving double slow and extra cautious. My neck hair points in every direction but an easy one for shaving.

I find Feathers to be a little rough at first. A couple shaves smooths them up. You might want to try corking the blade, too.

I shaved again today with the same Feather using Tabac. My razor was set on 2. It left my lower neck irritated with red bumps. Also had weepers. I did have a very smooth shave though. This reminds me of my experience with Derby Extra's. Great shave except for the after effect. I'm going to use the Feather one more time before I move on to another razor. This bums me out that I can't seem to find a razor that works for me. I'm wondering if I need some skin food or something? This whole ordeal has me thinking about another question which I'll post in the noob section. It will help out noobs as well.

After much trial and error with many blades, I use Feather blades exclusively. If I get too cocky with my razor, I get punished :blushing:. I treat Feathers the way I would treat a lightsaber (if they existed): Take care and try not to do anything stupid!

Sorry to hear about your razor burn. I hope you heal quickly and try again!

I was convinced that my '66 SS was defective when I first used it. Using a brand new Feather blade, it gave me the most painful, irritating shave in memory. It turned out that the blade was bad - when I replaced it, everything returned to normal.

A bad one does sneak through once in a while. I believe my bad blade was the first (ie: outer) blade in a 10-blade box. That shouldn't make a difference due to the shrinkwrap, but one never knows.
