Wich shaving kit to buy for a total beginner

Hi, I always had difficulty making a decent shave, and recently while I was lurking the net I read that shaving with a safety razor gives better results and it's actually cheaper. So I'm ready to try out and buy this kit on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300776786813?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

But then I thought that maybe it's better to ask the experts first if this is a good deal before actually start spending money on this, so here I am...

Thanks for the help

I have that razor and was not entirely impressed with it. It works, don't get me wrong. I just had to put more effort into it and was starting to hurt from using it. The derbys may work for you and then again may not. The brush is a brush and will most likely do the job. It would be good as a first brush in case you wreck it then it is not a big loss. Lots of people say that the derby soap is very much like the other turkish soaps like arko which people around here ABSOLUTELY LOVE and a few other tallow based soaps. Then the last but not least which comes to mind. It is from the U.K. You will be paying much more than you think you are paying. I do not remember the conversion, but I have been bitten that way a few times. I would suggest just finding a good quality razor, a decent soap, (doesn't have to cost alot to be good) try a few different blades, and see what you like. I started with the van der hagen shaving kit from wal mart It had the soap, a brush, and a lathering bowl. I still use it along with omega soap I bought off of Ebay. I keep going back to the cheaper Van der hagen. Good luck in your new shaving venture!

Hi, not sure what razor that is, maybe weishi, or the brush, but it looks ok to start, others here smarter than me will let you know exactly what is in the ad, just be patient, they will tell you!

Go into the buy and sell section, Koop has a great starter kit with a great razor r89' and a great brush soc boar, great soaps also. It's a nice starter set

You can do what I did. I wasn't sure DE shaving was going to be for me, so I went very economical in my first razor set-up. I purchased a Lord DE razor and a Van Der Hagan shave set, (bowl, soap, and brush), off of Amazon. I think it cost me like $15 all together. It was a really good first few shaves, and hooked me on DE shaving.
Good luck with what you choose!

Another option is something like what I did. I made my transition from cartridge to wetshaving a little more gradually than most seem to. I dropped the canned goo and went with a brush and soap for while before dropping the cartridges and getting a DE razor. If you have the patience to take that route, I would recommend it. Changing one thing at a time makes frustration/irritation less likely, and already having a good lather technique is a HUGE boon when you eventually grab that DE razor.

First, Welcome to B&B.

I'd advise you to pass on that "kit" You would be disappointed.

As suggested, haunt the BST section of B&B. You will end up with higher quality items.

Very good point! Wish I had done that. I think it was my 3rd or 4th shave before I had my lather where it needed to be. Good advice!

You can find good cheap stuff at Bestshave.net
Get the Wilkinson Classic Razor, the no. 6 Brush, Arko shaving cream, and some blades (Astra green, Derby, Shark and Rapira).

Optional is the Alum block.

I did the same thing only with a Merkur 178 instead of a Lord. Cost a bit more, but was a very cheap starter kit and I'm happy with it. I'm going back to that setup tonight because I haven't been happy with my last few shaves.

That is a very cheap kit!
the blades, soap and brush look ok, the razor I have not seen before. Maybe worthy try at that money?
Cheap recommendations from me- Lord razor £5 well reviewed for the money, perhaps look locally for blades, creams ( like Poraso ) and some good news- Portugal is home to Semogue the brush makers which make great brushes, particularly from boar bristle. Pm me if you can't find the lord razor, I'll send you a link

I'd order these:

Merkur 34c razor
Omega 81054 boar brush
Proraso cream (in a bowl) - it's more fun
Gillette Platinum blades
Nivea Sensitive ASB

no particular reason other than it's all good.

That is not a bad start and it sure is cheap.

I highly recommend bestshave for the blades and the shave soap.
Did you consider Arko already? Cheap and a proven performer!

I bought my Astras and SuperMax blades at bestshave and they are very good.

But if you can spare the money how about a better razor and a better brush?
The R89 / EJ89 is *the* razor of choice and will cost only 30 USD, it is also an easy seller on the BST if it does not work out.

Also available at Bullgoose among many other fine vendors if you live in the US.

As for the brush, the 1305 Semogue or the 620 are really hard to beat and only in the 13 USD range.

Twice the money, quadruple the fun and performance!

YMMV, of course.
