why so many razors?

why do you guys have 17 razors each? are they all different? do they serve different purposes? do you collect them because they are awesome?

I gotta know!

Most gents collect them as a hobby or should I say addiction. I went through this phase several years ago. I have pared down my collection to about 5 modern razors.

Why so many beers and liquors? They all get you drunk. Why so many cars? They all have 4 wheels and take you places. Different styles and preferences, my friend. What fun is life without variety? I only have a few razors myself. Not even in double-digits.

well I understand the alchohol and cars, I just didnt know if the razors actually acted differently or if they just look different.

After shaving with boring cartridge razors for years, then moving to traditional wetshaving with vintage razors, one discovers that there was a great variety of shaving devices that used to be manufactured. The urge to try them all out becomes irresistible. After trying out a variety of razors, some folks put a number of the ones they like into a shaving rotation. It keeps it interesting.

Several of the razor do shave differently. The adjustables and slants give closer shaves. The injectors have different iterations as well and give different shaves. You will have to collect a few and test them yourself.

Yes.
Yes.
Yes.

And now you know.

Keep reading here Dude, and you'll soon see what it's all about.

"If you have to ask, you don't understand"

I have my starter- a '58 SuperSpeed flare tip, a barber pole Slant, a Gillette NEW (which is such an awesome shaver it is now my main axe), and a recently-acquired (as in, today) Red Tip SuperSpeed.

To me that covers a pretty good spectrum. I might go for an adjustable someday just to try it out.

I see! Yup, they do shave differently. They feel differently in your hand, some shave closer than others, some are adjustable, some don't like certain blade, there are lots of variables. I use about 3 most of the time, usually just 2, one open-comb(New), and one adjustable(the 'Boy).

Some you may love, some you may hate. For instance, I can't use my '78 SSpd anymore. It feels like I'm not even shaving.

You gotta try an adjustable...i'm new to RAD. Started with a fat boy, then tried an Old, tech, and SS. The fat boy wins hands down so far (in any setting). I think my next purchase will be a contemporary model, maybe a merkur slant or 38C.

It's mostly because we are searching for shaving nirvana.

The quest for the perfect shave every time has become our drug, and we must sample every product available at least once, in order to satisfy our addiction for the day.

It doesn't matter that product X is the best we have found out of 100's of others, for product Y could be better yet, and our thirst will not be quenched until we try it, and find out for ourselves.

As you can see, this is an endless cycle, and thus true shaving nirvana can never be reached.:lol:

I think I have this pretty bad, as I am about a month, and a half in, and already have 8 razors: Gillette Ball End Tech, Gillette Fat Handle Tech, Red Tip Superspeed, Blue Tip Superspeed, Merkur 38 C in Red, Gem Open Comb Micromatic, Gem Safety Bar Micromatic, and a Gem Featherweight.:lol:

17 razors? Not yet.
Different? Definately.
Different purposes? Yep. Even my $1 Paki special has a purpose.
Awesome? 100%!

Every razor I own feels different, works better with certain prep and I hope to find that perfect shave so I can start everyday off knowing at least one thing went right.

Since I started shaving, I've been looking for the razor that gives the least amount of attitude.

I've gone through disposables, machs... electric, vibrating, sensor, fusion, quattro -- only to end up with an antique H. Boker King Cutter solingen straight razor. This of course needed careful restoration that I could not provide.

Instead of getting the 100+ dollar startup set for a straight I bought a quality Merkur with quality blades and a quality badger brush.

So for me it is less about pampering and daily rotation and more about finding something functional.
