Why isn't every man shaving like this!

I've just started wet shaving and as a black man I thought that I could never shave with a razor and not get razor burn (shaving bumps)...... until I met the safety razor!!!! I now get absolutely no irritation when I use my safety razor, even when I could only use clippers on my face I still got a bit of irritation and my hair grew back quick. I am also really happy because the hot spot for my irritation is the neck area which is also true for a majority of people specially black people. I found that using this system of shaving is the way forward for anyone!! no irritation, a f*****g close shave lol, blades are cheap and the shaving hardware looks good in your bathroom lol. Glad I learned how to use a safety razor!!!

I use a Merkur 1904 with Wilkinson Sword blades (69p for a pack of 5)
An Edwin Jagger pure badger hair brush
Erasmic shaving soap which is awesome
and clubman vanilla aftershave to top it off

Glad I learned how to use a safety razor!!!

There's part of the answer to your question. Who learns to shave these days? Gillette have kindly taken care of that for us all.

Few people know such tools are still available, others think they're caveman stuff for luddite weirdos.

Most men want speed and convenience, and Gillette delivers. For a price.

For guys like you with shaving issues, it's proven time and again that less is more, and technology can't replace skill and experience.

Isn't it nice when thing just work? Well done.

one word --- marketing - most young consumers (myself included) don't even know that Safety Razors are an option. Be a disciple and spread the word - its awesome and I'm happy you found a better way to shave.

be sure to read and ask as many questions as you can here at B&B - the people here are great - I've learned so much here its incredible.

I'm a white guy, but it is the strangest thing that the clearest class instruction memory I have from basic training 20 years ago was about pseudo-folliculitus barbae (shaving bumps). Must've made an impression on me for some reason, especially considering I never suffered from it. Weird.

Anyway, I'm surprised that any of the single blade disposable solutions created specifically for (or even the ones that aren't like Bic disposables) PFB didn't work for you. It's the same principle at work, or so I'd think.

Not positive which Erasmic you're using (soap? the one in the round container?), but the old cream was one of my favorites.

Glad you found a solution that works for you.

Hi Kingt1988!

Welcome to the Badger and Blade! Great that it's working out, sounds like you hit on the right combo of razor, blades, soap and brush! If you ever change any of that hardware or software, only change one thing at a time.

If you get a chance, introduce yourself at the Shave Clinic & Newbie Check-In

Well said, Drubbing, well said.

Welcome to B&B! Great to hear you've found your killer setup.
a big +1 to everything already said, especially "If you ever change any of that hardware or software, only change one thing at a time."

Clubman vanilla aftershave? :w00t: Noted for my next purchase!

Welcome to B&B. I came here 3 years ago with the same issues. I absolutely love shaving now. Sometimes I get a little bit of irritation, but it is nothing compared to what it used to be when I tried to shave with electrics and cartridges, and I can usually pinpoint the cause. B&B has become my most visited website and the fellowship and advice are invaluable. Once you have found your perfect setup in terms of soap/cream, brush, blade and razor you will never again look at any other method. Congratulations.

kingt, good to hear you're enjoying DE shaving. I have a question for you: When you first started DE shaving did your irritation go away very quickly or did it take you a few months to get your technique down and find the right combo of products? I'm not a black man but I do struggle with some irritation on my neck and that was the main reason I started DE shaving. My irritation has been greatly reduced since beginning DE shaving but I still have a bit of irritation.

I'm interested to hear what they told you in basic training about shaving bumps. Care to share? I've heard other people say that the military required soldiers to shave 2 or 3 times per day which is interesting if true.
