Why I love my Slim!

I've been using my Slim paired with an Astra SP for the last couple of shaves. I wanted to see how it would work with the new two-pass shaving technique I've been trying. I set it on 5 for my north-south pass, and down to 3 for the south-north pass. The results have been excellent so far! No irritation or weepers at all, even on my neck, and have been getting BBS on all parts of my face. Even with a mild razor like my Flare Tip, I was still getting some slight irritation on my neck. Having the ability to dial the razor down for that final pass seems to make all of the difference for me.

One more shave with the Astra, and then I'm going to see how this works with my other two blades of choice (Lord Plats & Red IP's). To me, those two blades aren't quite as sharp as the Astra, so I'm expecting at least a slight difference. But, we shall see! :001_cool:

I get very good shaves with my Slim set on 5 - but I'm still doing three passes also with Astra SP blades. I've tried bumping up the adjustment to 6 and 7 but, at those settings, I typically start getting some irritation.

Because they're awesome
Do yourself a favor and try some Gillette black and yellows. I like Astras but love those

The Merkur Progress and especially the modified Mergress were my adjustable RAD killer(s).
Until... I went vintage and (by a coincidence) got a Slim and a Fatboy. Quickly sold both Merkurs and have never regretted my decision. The FBs and Slims are supposed to "grow on trees" for our trans atlantic brothers but here in the "old world" the Slims and FBs rarely show up.

^what he said.

I love my slim adjustable, and the astras were great, but once I tried gillette blacks in it, I bought 105 blacks and am getting rid of the astras.

gonna have to get myself a 1964 slim. Bought a mergress and thought it'll be my one and only adjustable but now i need a slim like james bond

+1000. They're the cure for RAD.....almost.

I got a Slim, then a Fatboy, and haven't wanted another razor since. I'm eyeing a Merkur 34C, but only because I haven't used one yet. It's like a Ferrari owner eyeing a Porsche. I don't desperately crave one, it's more a curiosity.

And a +1 to trying a Gillette Yellow in it! Those are my blades, I currently have 250+ of them, and am thinking of getting another 100-pack just in case.

Any razors that still garner responses like the ones above speaks volumes about Gillette vintage razors. Built like tanks.

I also love my slim!!
but I've noticed that when I turn the knob to close the silo doors I can turn it till the doors are just closed or I can keep pushing it till that thing is really closed. Anyone experience something similar? I'm afraid I might be pushing the silo doors too much.

That last quarter turn is supposed to happen with Fatboys and Slims. I think that it just secures the blade better and locks the holder to prevent the closing mechanism from suddenly opening mid-shave.

Good to know!!
I was getting worried; but I'll try to buy another slim just in case the couples I own need a vacation

What you should feel during the final quarter-turn or so is the action of the compression spring. The razor needs to lock down completely regardless of where the adjustment is set. Changing the adjustment would make a change in the required length of the center rod. Since the rod is of fixed length, a spring is used as part of that assembly. When tight, the spring compresses as much as it needs to properly tighten the doors.

We tend to refer to it as a "quarter-turn" when in fact, the actual range is from 1/8 to 3/8 depending on what number the adjuster is set on and how thick the blade is.

It is possible for gunk to harden inside the coils of the spring and limit the amount of compression. This will cause the razor to not tighten properly, leading to a loose blade and blood loss. Cleaning, when required, is best accomplished by long soaks in hot soapy water to soften the crud.

Thanks Brad!
I'll start going the "whole turn" from now on!
