What's new

Why do I feel this way?

OK,

This has been bugging me for sometime now and I cannot figure it out.

Bought a 1979 Z1 SS. I have used it twice. It's my birth razor. Too mild. I was close to selling it but members on the B/S/T threatened to buy it and send it back to me.
Bought a 1904 in the summer...great looking razor...too mild for me. Sold it. I don't miss it.
Bought a FaTip in Nickle. Loved the look and the idea of it being an Italian razor. Sold it due to minimal use. I wish I would not have sold it.
Bought a feather portable last year. Terrible shaves for me, but there was just something cool about having it. Sold it, as I rarely used it. Wish I hadn't.
Bought a Feather SS...looked awesome. I could shave ok with it. I probably never gave it as much as a chance as I should have. I would slice myself every shave however, and got so ticked....I sold it. She has taken almost a month to get to the buyer. I'm likely going to have to refund his money. I miss it however, but hated using it after a while.

Got the R41 and it shaves very well. And a week before that I purchased the RR "Jaws" OC. I like them both. But now I have this overwhelming feeling to sell them. I know I'll regret it, but I feel like if I don't use it...then why hold on to it? It's not harming anyone sitting there. I somehow feel greedy for having such cool razors, and yet feel guilty for holding on to them.

Have a 39c and 37c...they're not going anywhere.

Now I find myself staring at the FaTip Piccolo...the first OC I wanted to buy...

What the heck is wrong with me?

You are like me ( skeeeerry). You are not a collector at heart, but you do want to give everything a shot, and keep what works best for you. Sometimes we mess up and sell something or PIF something we wish we hadn't but it happens sometimes.

Are you married? If not, how long do your relationships last? Do you feel relieved when you break up , but then regret that you did? Maybe you need a frugal SWMBO to give you the evil eye every time you hit the B/S/T and thus curb your seller's remorse.

I have a couple of razors on a shelf that I almost never use. I think someday I may find a friend or family member I can talk into DE shaving and I will give one away. I bought the other one because I just wanted an older razor - want is usually a good enough reason for someone like me. :biggrin1:

On the other hand, I had a beautiful Martin guitar that just sat in my closet and I had to sell it because it was too good an instrument to not be enjoyed. I don't think it's a bad thing to wish our purchases provide good service for someone (if not us). As long as you're not looking for a razor that does all the work for you I'm sure you'll find one that feels right and does the job in a way that satisfies you.

There are lots of people with real problems in the world. You're buying and selling razors. If that's your biggest concern I think you're doing just fine. I personally wouldn't get worked up over it.

Try keeping the razors, playing around with blades....then selling the razors! Don't get wound up - there's something of you in us all!

I think you are not giving your razors and blades enough time.
I find that It takes time to learn how a razor or a blade works.
every time you change something you are starting over.
right now, I am only changing the razor blades, nothing else.

Get an SE. You might like it.

Gave it a whirl. Just preferred the DE's.

Valid point.

Interesting concept. Been with the same wonderful woman 12 years, married for 7 with one lovely 1 year old daughter. Oddly, when I sold my stuff (because I thought my wife thought I had too much) she asked "Why did you sell all of that? Couldn't you just take turns using a different razor". /facepalm.

I have a bunch of razors that I will probably never use...Too many to list...I could use a different one every week for a year.

I can't stand the thought of selling any of them. I did stop buying after my R41.

I'm glad you sold the Fatip. she's staying with me. I really like it, and will/do use it. that said, I'm primarily shaving with straights. was on the road a few weeks ago and wished I'd taken the Fatip with me (left my straights home). it is going on my next trip. love the aggressiveness of it. it's juuuuuust right. and pretty.

My first DE was a Classic Shaving model made in India. medium cutter. not a thing wrong with it, but is' been on the shelf for a good while. it'll probably get sold/PIF'd

I've got a super speed that's way too mild for my taste. if I don't convert a co-worker with it, it'll get PIF'd. I don't really care about a birth year razor, and don't see finding a straight, so I have no issue ever finding/keeping a birth year. my grandfather had a SS that I would keep, if we still had it. but simply for sentimental reasons.

I've got a German travel OC that I thought was cool for the size, and happy with the shave until I took it on the road and used it two weeks straight. now, not so much. I'll probably keep it for short duration, lightly packed trips. and only for that. it may go.

so those are my DEs, and I only really care about keeping one. the Fatip. so again, thanks for selling it. I hadn't found a nickel until you put it up for sale.

my straights:

Tonsorial Gem, 5/8th with a muted toe from Whipped Dog, and a starter kit. I've yet to have a satisfactory shave with it. but I'm keeping it as a restoration test bed. it's hard to hone because it requires a rolling cross stroke. one of the scales cracked and broke at the pivot pin. so I'm putting together the tools and parts to replace the scales. I'll use this one to work on my skills. once I'm happy with it, I'll either keep it or turn it loose. don't know yet. I may want to keep it just because of the work I'm going to put into it. that remains to be seen.

Griffon 5/8 spike. my first straight I bought and predates my DEs. it needs some rebuild too, doesn't center, and doesn't have a great edge. I used my knife hones and CrO2/IoO2 on balsa to get a buttery edge once. but that didn't last, because of the floating pivot pin. I'll fix that, and probably keep it for life. the blade itself is pretty. jimped top and bottom, nice etching. light and maneuverable, and sings like a soprano. the patina it has enhances it in my opinion.

Max Lieb 5/8 half hollow. clean blade with decent rescale. nothing really wrong with it, but it'll probably go at some point. I'm in no hurry.

Genco Army/Navy 6/8th. just got my first real hone on it, using "Devil's paper". I'm happy with it, but it's pretty a plain jane. it'll probably be my road razor, because it won't hurt to loose it.

Wade & Butcher Bow. I got it with minimum wear, and polished up the blade to 3K grit. I got it with cheap plastic scales, so it went off to Doc226 and came home with beautiful horn scales, bone wedge, and a flawlessly buttery Jnat edge on it. she's a keeper.

but I keep finding myself looking for and at new possibilities.

Soaps: I have a bunch of samples that got a few uses, and have sat otherwise. I've given away a couple that I just don't like. didn't bother me at all to turn them loose. I've got a couple that are perfectly fine, but hardly get used. my go to has been TOBS Eton cream. but I'm really falling in love with the tallows, now that I've mastered the lather. MWF and Mike's Naturals are quickly becoming go-to's for me. and I'll probably pick up some more Bald Frog too.

if you aren't happy turning them loose, keep 'em. use em when you want. if you want.

I don't have any problem turning loose something I don't like, or doesn't get my nipples hard, if you will. so, I don't really get where you're coming from. but you're not losing anything by keeping what you've already bought. if the wife's cool.... keep em. until you're sure.
