What's new

Why didnt anyone tell me!

Where are my Gillette Platinums! I cant shave without them. I used my last blade several weeks ago and thought I would burn through some feathers that have been collecting dust for more than a year. I am getting low on feathers and just logged onto westcoastshaving.com to restock my cabinet with Swedes. But they are gone. I then come over here and am about to start a thread asking where I can buy some when I decide to do a search first. Can you imagine the horror when I read "Swedes" and "discontinued" in the same sentence?

I think I am going to have an anxiety attack once this shock wears off.

I NEED MY GILLETTE PLATINUMS!

I feel so lost - I dont know where to turn.

Where have you been?

Since it was discovered a few months ago the general opinion of the shave forums has been that Super Iridiums are nearly identical the the Gillette Swede. I happen to agree with this as well. Even though I have a few Swedes left, I've been shaving with the Iridiums and getting great shaves equal to that of the Swede.

I made my own sample pack from west coast shaving and bought some Super Iridiums. From searching around it souds like a lot of poeple like the Gillette 7 O'Clock too.

Most people find the Super Iridium smoother than the 7o'clock Yellow, including me.

I have a small stash of 7o'clock yellows, and one pack of Super Iridiums, but both are farther up the sharpness scale than I like.

The most die-hard "Swede" fan over at SMF used to rate the Crystal as the only other blade he could find acceptable, until he tried the Super Iridium. You might try some Crystals, or Shark Super Stainless.

There is a new big factory for blades in St. Peterburg, Russia.
They are producing several kinds of Sputnik-blades and
now they are producing the (whole?) European Gillette-blades
too. It´s written on the packages too.
I´ve seen this blades 2 month ago the first time in France.
Quality is okay. Comparable to IP or so.

You're comparing those recycled beer cans to IP's?

Dude....

Oh and Jack. I hate to bring bad tidings, but I must inform you that Sweeds are discontinued. Better stock u....oh wait.

Jack - a nickels worth of free advice. Ive been DE shaving for about two years now. During that time, I have seem product after product go the way of the dodo, especially blades. Ive learned my lesson - the shelf life on these things is so long and the price is so low - when i find a blade i love, i immediately stock up w at least a hundred, usually more. Havent regretted it yet!

The current Gillette Platinum's made in Russia are a fine blade. I like them a bit more that the yellow 7 O'clocks. I could do without the glue though! They might be a good replacement for you.

because we thought it would be funny to see your reaction
Man, that was so cold.

I know your pain.
Suck it up and get to searching for your new favorite blade.
You may still find a few pockets of Swedes on eBay in the UK.
They will cost you and the supply is dwindling fast because ... they ain't makin' 'em no more.
I even managed to find 5 packages a few months ago in Cambridge Chemists here in New York. I was surprised because the word had been out for quite some time by then. I bought them all at $7.50 a pack, less a 10% discount for B&B members. Check out the obscure drugstores around you. They might not have a big call for DE blades so their stock doesn't move quickly.
Best of Luck.

Opinion of the forumz? Personally, I would disagree with that statement. The SI is not as smooth as the Swede, period. Sharpness is about the same, tho. Very similar to the Yellow, as they more than likely are stamped on the same machine.

ATLJ, since the Swedes are discontinued, get your hands on some Gillette Super Stainless. Superior to the Swede, and less expensive. You will have to resort to finding them on eBay, tho.
