What's new

Why are butterscotch brushes so desirable?

Why are butterscotch brushes so desirable, rare, expensive? Is there anything truly special about them? Or are they just the regular old acrylic but in yellow rather than black or white?

True butterscotch is a patina that forms on catalin, a formaldehyde compound. Catalin is no longer manufactured, probably for health & safety reasons.

Modern butterscotch-like colors are imitations.

So by these logics, is vintage butterscotch the only one with any real worth? And the new butterscotch is just capitalizing on the quality, vintage stuff?

In my experience the weight, feel and color of a true Catalin brush is unique.

That being said it is true personal preference. I'm a vintage fan. If you like a new butterscotch handle pull the trigger.

I know the butterscotch I got from Simpsons was imation but the color looked nice. Juxtaposition of butterscotch & badger hair color appealed to me.

So what is exactly considered a "true" butterscotch and what is imitation? How would a novice like myself know he is getting a vintage/true butterscotch? (...and did Ever-Ready ever have one they put out?)

Butterscotch is a color changed reaction from UV or something like that. It has a warmth that faux doesn't.

Most butterscotch is vintage afaik
