Why are boar brush lofts generally high?

This has been bugging me lately as I've perused boar brushes. I have an Omega 10065 that I love, great width at 24mm, but the loft is pretty big and that just seems to be the standard across manufacturers. Are there no boars out there that fit the short and wide model like a Chubby/Stubby-style badger? And if not, why is that?

Boar bristles are pretty stiff.
Without a high loft it would be like lathering up with the barbeque grill cleaning brush.

Semogue 620 has one of the shorter lofts I've seen - 50mm. I find it just about right, for this brush at least. Any bigger and it'd be a bit too soft, any smaller and it'd be a stick.

Phil is quite right of course, boar bristles are stiff, but tips can be soft. When fully dry, the 620 could probably hold up a small plate. It's amazing how it softens up when wet, but has loads of backbone.

They're not just inexpensive, they're good.

Oh Man, I can't wait to get mine.....

Where does one find Semogues, anyway? Can't seem to locate vendors for the life of me.

This might fit the bill. I don't own one, but it looks promising.

I have this one and the bristles are fine, but the handle is REALLY small and stubby. The loft, while low by normal boar standards, visually seems high given the very stubby handle. I use this one primarily as a travel brush.

I recently got a similar lowish (50mm) loft boar brush with a more ergonomic handle (Semogue 1438) that I prefer overall (http://vintagescent.com/shaving-brushes-c-5/semogue-1438-shaving-brush-p-94).

I've got a large flat boar brush for doing the dishes - it's got about a 1/2 inch loft and BOY is that sucker scrubby!

That's what I was afraid of. Do you know if it's acrylic or plastic?

As a chemical engineer, I consider acrylic to be a type of plastic (polymer), so I'm not sure how to answer. That said, while I'm not positive of the type of plastic, It is something hard and rigid - e.g. an acrylic polymer or possibly a polyester or polycarbonate. It definitely does not seem like it is made of a more pliable injection molded plastic like polypropylene or polyethylene (e.g. VDH brush handles).
