Why a watch?

My son will be 11 soon and I was thinking about a watch for a birthday present. SWMBO says "Now that everyone carries a cell phone why would you need a watch?" I have several watches that I haven't worn in years so I couldn't come up with a good argument. Anybody have a good argument to enable me?

In a meeting (or class, in his case) it is less obvious to glance at your wrist then to pull out a phone. And, if it is a mechanical watch, you can enjoy wearing a piece of craftsmanship

Not to mention as men we don't really have many ways to bling our selves up. And besides what does an 11 year old need with a cell phone.

Maybe it's the style now? I'm older so maybe I'm off base. Can't be any worse than the "wearing glasses with no lense" style. Maybe he likes watches or his friends have them.

I know a ton of people who don't wear a wristwatch.
They have their phones.
I happen to think a wristwatch looks nice.
A lot classier IMO. Maybe go with that. The classy argument.

But, this wacky modern age might just do away with those things.
It's sad really.

Well....If the world goes to hell in a hand basket, do you think the cell towers will still be working?
If, you are in a "dead zone" does the cell phone still give the correct time?
In the middle of a hurricane or flood will you grab your phone?
When the battery dies after X number of hours, what?
And my final comment...In the Zombie apocalypse do you really need that cell phone?

I guess you need to gauge it off your son. Is he the type of child that would enjoy a watch as a present? As an 11 year old I would have loved a watch as a present but it would have needed to fit into my style, and by default my friends style. There are lots of companies around that sell functional, robust, fashionable watches, that won’t break the bank but will last him a while.

If he’s a typical kid I’d have a look here www.nixonnow.com. Lots of funky choices, available at most skateboard, surf shops.

Watches are for sure more of a style choice then a functional piece anymore, which is why a larger and larger percentage of people aren’t wearing them. Which is a shame since watches can be amazing pieces of art and craftsmanship. If you follow some of my posts you’ll see I have a watch AD, but even I who never leaves the house without a watch, check my computer or my Blackberry for the time more than my wrist.

I'd go crazy if I didn't have a watch on. I never use my cell phone just to look at the time. I never understood folks who do that. It takes a lot more time and effort to pull out a phone than it does to look down at my wrist. Plus, if you are a student or a professional in a meeting, it is often not appropriate or allowed to pull out your cell phone. You may just be looking at the time, but if someone sees you looking at your phone, they will assume you are reading a text or a Facebook update, rather than paying attention.

Now half as wise
Both of my sons lost at least one or two watches at that age (early teens) so take that possibility into consideration, especially the cost.

I think you'll find that most people on this forum will appreciate a watch. After all, it's a "traditional" thing and as "traditional" wet shavers we all appreciate "tradition". I began wearing a watch in my early teens and I continue to wear a watch during all waking hours except to shower. I have different watches for different uses. I can not stand to be without one. I do carry a cell phone most of the time and never use it to check the time. Too much of a hassle.

As far as my kids go, I try to sneak in some appreciation for traditional things here and there. Watches are one of those things and I've had mixed results. I started each of my kids off with an inexpensive digital Timex for their eighth birthdays. The oldest (a boy) wore his off and on and I eventually got him a nicer Seiko chronograph for his 15 birthday, which he wears from time to time. My middle child (a girl) does not wear a watch...period. The youngest (a boy) has not taken his off since he got it. He wears it to bed, in the shower, swimming, playing...everywhere. He is well on his way to being a lifelong watch wearer.

Haurex, an Italian company, makes a special watch,I think it's called a promise watch. It's a young man/boys first watch.
A couple of other companies have a "junior"watch, again a young mans first watch.

Ask your wife why she wears earrings, bracelets, necklaces? At least with watch, you will also know the time of day.

A great watch will stand the test of time. It will be water proof, it will resist extreme temperatures and altitudes, it will take hard knocks and keep on keeping on and it will outlast 100 cellphones and besides, they're just way classier. I don't wear one as often as I did since my favorite watch that was a pass down from my father (Seiko G757) finally gave up the ghost..god I miss that watch.

Something I just thought of- there are situations where people are asked to turn their cell phones off, but never a watch.

I saw a TV program on the high-end ("luxury") watch market in Hong Kong. One of the dealers said:

. . . "It's not about telling time -- for that, you can use your phone!"

On the other hand, my Casio G-Shock wristwatch is a lot tougher than my phone, and a lot quicker to look at. It's radio-controlled, runs off available light, and will probably be on my wrist when I'm buried. It has no "bling" at all.
