What's new

who would get a mach 3 shave at a barber shop?

They go through all that effort to achieve a traditional shop, then use a cartridge razor? What a waste.

Also, who the hell thinks they just had a straight razor shave when they're using a fancy handled Mach 3?

Nice shop, did not like the gent doing the talking. All this focus on tradition and then using a Mach 3?! Could at least use a DE or SE razor.

I would try it at least once.

Results couldn't be any worse than my first attempts with a cartridge razor, blood letting indeed!

i agree. straight razor or not, its the end result that matters. plus a beer at the end seems worth it.
Positively the end result does matter but a cartridge ???
I am not familiar with today's hygiene requirements that some bureaucrats are making up so it might not be too long until straight razor shaving will be banned completely, so the shop keeper might have a point for using a new disposable cartridge every time. But a new blade every time he can also do with a DE razor. At least all other prep is very traditional.

A relaxing experience, clean shaven and a pint of Guinness, that doesn't sound half bad, does it ?

Bit by bit, they're getting there. Now they've just gotta get their barbers fully trained with a proper barber's razor, and how to use pre-shave and generate lather with a brush.

I've been shaved by barbers using cartridges before as well as straight razors -- years ago, prior to my traditional shaving. Loved the hot towel and the menthol cream, which, if I recall, was a heated goo, although applied with a brush, which I liked. Knowing what I know now, I'd ask in advance what their shave set up is, and if they're not using a straight razor, shavette, or perhaps a DE, and traditional products and techniques, I'd probably keep shopping for a place that did -- with a reputation for it. Although, the shop does look fun, and I like the booze as the after-treat, a nice update from lollypops.

I also hope Aiden loosens/warms up a bit. How he presents himself is the least appealing part in the video.

Since I get razor burn and rash using mach 3's I would not, so yes for me it is the end result that matters. Of course my experience is not everyone's.

From the video:

"Not only do many expect to get a straight razor shave, Many of them believe that after being shaved with a modern multi-blade razor, which is what we use. They leave thinking that they've been shaved with a straight razor.

I got a complimentary haircut and shave from a nearby casino for my bday... When I saw her whip out a gillette fusion with a custom handle I said "just the haircut please" who would pay money for a cart shave!

No. Mainly because a traditional shop in my mind dose not use carts, whats the point? I could do just as well in my own bathroom with a cart, though I wont I'd much rather use my DE. Meh, I would turn the shave down in a heart beat...ridiculous in my mind. Straits are what I have in mind at a barber, not plastic. Imho

Dis she ask why you didn't want the shave?

I don't think there's any regulation against using a DE or shavette if the proper protocols are in place. I personally wouldn't go for a cartridge shave. It's disappointing that the brush and lather is out of the question due to regulations as well. I wonder what years exactly all of these laws came about. I can remember as a kid in the mid 1980s, the barber my grandfather took me too still used a real straight, giving shaves with a no-filter cigarette sticking from the corner of his mouth.

Not sure if that was simply before the new rules or if that particular old fellow just ignored them at the time. But I never saw or heard of him cutting anybody or anyone getting septicemia. Never even set anyone's head on fire with the ciggie as far as I know

Hear! Hear! A good straight razor shave is never complete without Lucky Strike ashes on the shoulder.

I like the shop but I would walk out when the fusion or a mach 3 came out. If I'm going to pay the bucks I want old school!:straight:AoS has some stores with Barber Spas. I have one about 1/2 hour away. The Royal Shave is $55.00 and takes about 45 minutes. They use straight razors, as it should be. The downside is they do not give you an ale, rats:crying:. However, I'd rather spend the money on more shaving stuff:biggrin1:.
