Whistling (extra loud)

Can someone please tell me how to whistle very loudly? My father has tried to show me numerous times and I can't seem to make it happen. He would place his thumb and his middle finger folded into his mouth and produce a sound loud as all get out. Sadly, I can only whistle as if I am whistling a tune.

I have also seen people produce a very loud whistle by just putting their first and second fingers in their mouths, as if they were giving the peace sign.

Also, what is it about this technique that makes the whistle so loud?

A woman friend of mine can do the fingers whistle and it's so loud it hurts my ears! Can't get more than a hiss when I try it.
