Whipped dog suggestions

I previously purchased a 24mm brush and had it drilled to 20mm. I didn't really understand what that does to lather holding. Love the brush, but it doesn't hold a lot, as one would expect. What is a good depth for the knot. I want to give it a little more backbone for face lathering, but I think .20mm is a bit too deep for my liking.

I think I stuck with the standard loft, but I wish I had it drilled deeper. It's a great brush, but a little too floppy for me. I like face lathering but it's just too soft. I've had boar/synthetic brushes as well and they are too firm. Still waiting to get that right combination of softness and firmness.

A 24mm knot with a 45mm loft (WD 65mm loft knot in 20mm hole) is a very short loft. The lowest I would go would be a 48mm, and more likely a 50-52mm loft - firm but with some give and flow-through. A good rule of thumb is a loft from 2 to 2.2 times the diameter of the knot.

I had my 24mm Silvertip set to 50mm and it's a decent face latherer and a great bowl latherer (I prefer bowl lathering). Has some backbone and is quite soft. One of my faves.

Thanks for the info. I was trying to wrap my head around the numbers. I think I will go with a .50mm.

FYI, there are a few ready made firehouse handle brushes on whipped dog if you don't feel like waiting for a custom handle
