Which would you recommend ? drugstore classics

Hi all ,

This is my first post in this side of the forum and well ... I know that I am getting some grey flannel for christmas but the wife has offered to get one of the drugstore classics for me now since they are on sale and in gift sets or large huge bottle size .

So these are the choices

English leather 8 oz cologne for 10$ at Big lots
Bristish sterling set with a/s/ and cologne for 9$ walmart
Canoe a/s/ and cologne set 9$ walmart

the other scents I have tried did not do much for me and well these 3 I like , so if you were me or maybe your choosing yourself which would you get ?

Of those three, I would choose the British Sterling set (I got it at Wal-Mart just recently). I've always liked the scent, though it's one of those you can overdose on. It has this slight sandalwood finish that I enjoy. I'm told it's like Floris 89 for those of us on a budget but I like it for its own merits.

I also would pick British Sterling out of these 3. I tried all 3 within the last 6 months, and the English Leather didn't smell as rich as I remembered it smelling when I first wore it. I always liked British Sterling, and it smells like I remember it smelling the first time around. I didn't wear Canoe when it first came out, but I still preferred the British Sterling, although that may have been the nostalgia factor, for me. They are all good fragrances, and your choice should be based on which one you like the best.

Hummm..I like all three of those choices. I think I will deviate from the above posters though, and pick Canoe.

Although keep in mind, it does smell a lot like Clubman; so if you dislike Clubman you should stay away from Canoe.

Just throwing this out there, but Walmart is also offering huge bottles of Stetson Aftershave (8 oz), and the matching Cologne Splash (1.75 oz) for I believe $9 each. :thumbup1:

Also in this realm my local Dollar General had .5 oz bottles of Canoe, British Sterling, English Leather, and Navy splash colognes for $2 each.

Big Lots (if you have one nearby) also has some great prices on Aftershave/Cologne sets, like a huge bottle of Canoe AS for $10, and a .5 oz spray bottle of Mcgraw by Tim Mcgraw for $5.

Agree that the English Leather isn't what it once was. I have a small bottle of British Sterling which I sometimes dab on; wife says she likes it. What does your wife think of these picks?

my choice , or what I am leaning toward is the english leather , Now , I love the way canoe smells , but I have already some pianud clubman and they are to my nose at least somewhat simular..And my wife well she cant tell the diff from one or the other , she is pregnant and she is always stuffy now so ...she is no help
so for somehting diff ,I dont know ,English leather

I never did wear the old form. of EL so I cannot compare it but I enjoy it now and 8 oz should hold me over for a while I would think ...but who knows I have some Lilac Vegetal coming to me in the mail as we speak and i may be one of the chosen and may never need another scent :)

Myself, I'd choose the English Leather and the British Sterling. And I might try Stetson someday.

Wally world also has $5 small bottles of English Leather and Canoe. I didn't see British Sterling though. Not as good of a deal as the $9 package but you could buy EL and Canoe A/S for $10.

English Leather has been my go-to scent for decades (although it's recently been relegated to the back of the shelf while I've been experimenting with newer fragrances). I agree that the newer versions don't seem to pack the leather wallop that I remember from the 70s, but that just might be my deteriorating nose and mental condition! :001_cool:

I recently found a set that had .5ml bottles of EL, canoe, EL Black, Navy, and British Sterling in it for 8 bucks. I loved Canoe and to me British Sterling is similar with a little more spice too it. I do not care for the English Leather but like the English Leather Black and my wife loves Navy so that may end up in my stocking in a full version . You may want to see if you can find those around that way you can try them all.

Am I mistaken, or did English Leather used to come in a glass bottle, and now is in a plastic bottle? It's probably all in my head, but when I open a plastic bottle and sniff, I notice the plastic smell. It probably doesn't carry over on the cologne once it's poured out, but it's hard for me to set that aside. But then, I also prefer to drink out of a "glass" glass, not a plastic one. I'm not anal, (at least not about this) I use plastic cups all the time. But when given the choice, I prefer real glass.

As far as I know, EL cologne is still available in a glass bottle. They do offer a plastic travel bottle, but the standard packaging is still glass.

British Sterling smells like Floris 89? After all the expense and trouble to secure the Floris, I could have just gone to CVS? Seriously, is this so?

Old spice but if you are at wally world you might want to try english leather black. At first I didnt like it but now I love it. At the walmart I went they had a small bottle for 3 bucks and a bigger bottle for 5.

well...drumroll please......

English Leather has won out with an addition thrown in ... Old spice 2.5 oz with deoderant stick for 5$

so the best of both worlds and on top of that all a bonus , today I ordered 4 pinaud products ( special reserve , lime musk , clubman and bay rum ) I think I may be set for a while but I fear a new AD is coming on ...oh and ive got penhaligons sampler coming
