Which will I like the best?

Jnat, coticule, or film?

So I've been using the straight for a little over a year now. Some of the rushed mornings still see the odd DE or SE though, I really get a better shave with the straight. For several months I managed with CrOx and SRAD, but eventually started honing my own. My first reasonable success was with film, after an initial disaster with Norton stones (which I already had for woodworking), but I've since gone back and had good results with Norton 1K, 4K, 8K, and Chosera 10K.

Of course I couldn't be satisfied with just one method of finishing:biggrin1: (in true B&B fashion!) I've been trying to decide what to try next. I decided to do a little experiment. I have 4 identical Solingen razors from a 7 day set. I sent 3 to Doc so he could finish each one with a different method. So, for the next several days I will shave blinded:scared::straight: Doc has provided me the key in a sealed envelope. I'll rotate all three in order, for several days. Valobra stick (my current 3017 victim), the 2012 B&B LE brush, and a Scrupleworks strop.

After several shaves with each, I'll open the envelope, and see what to buy next!

Awesome. Look forward to the results. Last time I did this for a member it was 2 razors but they were different. This is truly he ultimate test.

All three where started with killing the current edge on glass.

JNAT edge bevel set on botan and progressed to plain water finished on Ozuko Asagi
Coticule was a dilucot finished on a natural combo stone with oil (of course)
Film had bevel set on JNS 1k, naniwa 5k, naniwa 8k, 3 micron and 1 micron film.

All three passed the HHT easily. I sent videos of all three to strop.

Should be very interesting.

I recently sent out three razors to try different synthetic edges (Shapton Pro, Naniwa Chosera/12kSS, and film)...will be interesting to see if I can distinguish them. Should try out a few naturals sometime, just for fun.

Day 1

Wow, what an edge! If this is not film, I'm going to be in the market for stones! If it's film, I've got some work to do on my technique.

Very cool idea. Also keep in mind Doc is s pro and will be sending you a "maxed out version" of each method. It may take a little while to yield comparable results with any option. Therefore, play it safe and buy both. Some Coticules and Jnats to see what works better for you :)

Methinks thou dost enable too much.

Very interesting thread. I myself never got a diffrent edge than a coticule. I'm thinking of making a balsa strop with chromium oxide one day but up to this point I'm very pleased with the smooth edges I get from a coti.

Doc is an avowed film hater, I cry "foul"
Nah, just lacks MoJo-last time I did this the user actually preferred the film edge. It was on two different razors but he liked film better. I sent my best efforts on all three.

Let the chips fall where they may. The HHT off all three was very good.
