Which TGN knot should I get?

I'm thinking about doing my first brush restoration. I want a scrubby Badger brush. What do you guys recommend? What knot size? Can I get a Silvertip or Super Badger to be scrubby?

Anything will be scrubby if you make the loft short enough. If you want scrubby at a reasonable loft though, both the Best and Finest are nice knots with a lot of scrub. The black is decent too, but has a bit more prickliness than the others.

I like 18mm-20mm for stiffer bristle brushes (brushes that I don't want to set super deep), and 21-24mm for softer bristles (silvertips/supers that I will stuff into the handle well past the binding of the knot.)

Also is there any review out for these knots? Are they solid good quality knots?

How are the boars and badger knots? Especially the finest and super badger knots

The only TGN boar I've used is the UK cream boar. It's ok, but I wouldn't recommend it. There are much better boar brushes out there.

I haven't used the China super, but the UK super (which they don't carry anymore) is reasonably dense and very soft, but has massive amounts of loft (like 65mm), so you need a handle you can set the knot very deeply in.

The Finests are by far the most popular TGN knots here, with the Grade A Silvertips being a distant second. They seem like a high end "Best". Less prickliness, a little more softness at the tips, slightly less backbone per hair than Best, but nicely packed and definitely much closer to Best than they are to Silvertip.

I've used the finest, regular silvertips, and grade a silvertips. Finest and regular silvertip is pretty scrubby but neither are as scritchy as my tweezerman. The grade a is extremely soft. I'd go with a finest but if the black knots are more scritchy maybe you'd like one of those.

Also, all of the ones I've tried are 'extra hair'.

I have a 24mm in extra stuffed finest with about 55mm loft and a 20mm in best with about 40mm loft. I prefer the best for face lathering, as I find it to be a more scrubby with a bit but not too much scritchyness. The Finest has good backbone and springyness, but the tips are much softer. It's a great all-arounder and feels more posh. I tend to use it more with cremes. I have a 22mm Grade A Silvertip Fan set at 48mm on the way and can follow-up with a report on that, although I expect it to be less scrubby than either of the finest or best.

Shorter loft = scrubbier brush.

See my wiki for a few comparisons of different knots.

Knot size will really depend on your handle. My last would only take a 15mm knot !

Just about to shave with a Best and will add that to my "report" :biggrin1:
