Which Shavette and why?

I would get a Parker and call it a day. It is very likely after a few weeks or months you will upgrade anyway and the shavette will be relegated to a travel razor. So don't spend too much on the shavette now.

I think the Dovo Shavette is about the best of these choices. Not like shaving with a stratight razor, or even a Feather DX type razor.

Wearing out probably won't be the problem - you probably won't use it long enough to wear it out (which would be a long time). Whether a broken blade shavette is the proper choice is a question in my mind. However, if you are set on it, the Parker will work fine.

I'm with ladykate on this, I found it a waste of money (although they are not expensive), the resulting shaves are not that special. The Feather of KAI razors are a whole lot better and shave like a straight, they have more weight to them also. In fact since I discovered them I rarely use my straights anymore. Or you could try a CJB (korean imitation of the Feather, around $30 I believe)

The thing with the Parker is that size- and form-wise, it does come close to straights. So at the very least, it helps the beginner to learn how to hold the razor and pull skin with the off-hand. As Kent mentions above, I mostly use it for short trips now, when I don't have enough room to pack a strop. You can buy or use DE blades (breaking them in half lengthwise while still in the paper wrapper), so there is really no extra cost to trying apart from ~$20 for the razor (I have the all stainless steel version, which doesn't seem prone to cracking). Go slow and be careful with the angles, it does like to bite a bit.

Out of those. I was looking at the last one, the satin-finished stainless steel version.
Or
#201000 Shavette has a plastic red handle, a polished stainless steel 'blade holder holder'

Love the look of the 2nd one, but it's not going to wear out on me is it? Will either of them?

Shavette ≠ Conventional straight razor, IMO. But,

If you opt for a Dovo shavette, I would recommend getting the optional green blade holder, too. You will be able use a blade like the longer and stiffer Personna SE blades.. I had a Dovo Shavette ( sold it) . I have an 'El Cheapo' Magic shavette from Sally's - paid < $10.00.
Just fine for detail work or dopp bag travel shaving, IMO. When traveling, I have my Feather SS Kami but still keep one of the Sally's cheapo folder shavettes in there, too.

(At home I shave with my go to Dorko or other shave ready conventional straight razor in my rotation)

The Personna or Fromm Hair Shaper blades are, indeed, much nicer than the razor blades. They are stiffer and much more forgiving. They also last much longer. However, if you are going to go that route, just get a SextoBlade straight off eBay and use the Personnas in it. You will probably pay less and get a better feeling razor. This is my "new but old" discovery recently. TheVez2 has a thread about them. Be careful and get the razor version and not the much lighter hair shaper version - although either one is ahead of a broken blade shavette.

I guess the best advice is- just get one and start straight shavin'!!

OMG... Are you kidding? It is much more productive to talk about this. If a decision is made then we don't get to offer our sage advice and he will find out that he can probably make it work anyway. Man... you just ruined it for all us gabbers. OBTW: While I try to write substantive posts, this one sucks but I decided to write it anyway since it is number 1000 and I didn't want a perfect record. ;-}

And I want a BaconKamisori.

I hear ya! Grats on the 1k!

I'd stay away from the Dovo straights. IMHO they don't shave are good as the Parker's, and they cost 3 times as much. Aslo take a look at the Feather AC's or the Kai straights. More money for sure, but a top of the line straight. Any of the Parker's will also be a sturdy straight that will do the job.

I've used a parker SR1 before. It held up pretty well. The dovo I'm sure will give you equal if not better durability. Once you have your technique you will find that it will be a preference on the type of blade you use instead of the type of razor. I've tried plenty and eventually stuck with feather blades using my parker. They are really sharp and will give you a close shave.

The dovo shavettes are the worst designed shavettes out there. Feathers are the best, but expensive. Vintage Wecks are the best cheap option with the Parker being the next best choice.

What shavette:

Parker

Why:

Because I said so.

They also are excellent shavers in their own right. They allow for an extremely low angle of attack (the 30 degree angle myth is total BS and will result in a crappy shave). You want to practically lay the straight flat against your cheek whilst shaving.

The Dovos and assorted other folded steel with plastic insert shavette aren't worthy of shaving the tangled undergrowth from my armpits. They suck, pure and simple.

Traditionalists will wail and gnash their teeth that it isn't a real straight.
Yet it is.
It's different, yes, but no less effective.

Buy a Parker now
Thank me later.
