Which Shavemac?

I am going to be upgrading my shaving brush this holiday season and am pretty sure I will get a Shavemac. I am hoping you guys can help me decide which one to get.

-My current brush is a Vulfix 1016 pure badger. Loft 51mm, height 102mm, and knot 20mm. I want a nice upgrade: softer hair, better lathering, more dense

-I use creams (mostly soft like AOS, TOBS, but I also have CF

-I lather in a bowl. The bowl I use is 3 inches/76mm deep (if that matters)

-I want to upgrade to finest badger, but would not rule out Silvertip if a good brush would be in my price range (and with Shavemac, I think it might be in my price range)

-I would prefer a non-ivory handle

-My target price range be $85 and up to around $105

What model, or models, and knot size (if it is an option on that model), would you recommend?

I am really looking forward to seeing what you all recommend! :thumbup1:

I believe the #25 or #177 in Finest with a black handle will fit the bill. You can get various knot sizes 21mm, 23mm, ??.

They are very nice brushes and should work well for bowl lathering.

I have the #25 21mm finest w/ black handle.

I use my Shavemac #177 23mm Silvertip for bowl lathering and love it. The handle design makes it easy to hold onto for my sized hands and I can get a good grip on it even when it's covered in lather.

Have you spec'd and priced a custom on the Shavemac site? Knot size and handle should be purchased based on personal preference more than anything else IMO so I would suggest you check out the range of options online and build up a custom to suit you.

I recently ordered a custom from Bernd for face lathering so the spec on that brush is very different from my #177. Comparing the two:
-#177 Silvertip 23/50mm Bulb -#163 Silvertip 21/45mm Fan

Thanks, but I don't see a #25 on the site. The models are 3 or 4 digits.

Do you mean the "Custom Made" section? Everything there is 23mm only. So, while the handle and color is configurable, the knot size seems not to be.

Unless I am looking in the wrong place.

Thanks!

Bernd is great about putting any knot on any handle or color of handle. Just deside on the knot (loft and size) and the handle (style and color) then send him an email on the contact page (link in upper right hand corner of the Shavemac web page). It might take a couple days for him to get back to you, but he will in good time. That is the way I got all three of my customs from him.

Sorry, I chose my handle on the site and then sent an email for a quote with the knot and style of my choice. You can use the other brushes on the site for a rough idea on the cost associated with different knot size.

Loric,

Have you communicated with Bernd lately? I have been trying to speak wiith him about a custom I want to order but have not been able to get a reply for nearly a week...

I talked to him a couple weeks ago. But on another thread someone mentioned that it was a holiday in Germany, so he is most likely off or behind with that. Not to mention the holiday season here is starting to pick up, so I bet he is busy. Just be patient, thats the best advise I can give for now.

Patient...

You obviously are in denial with your SBAD, I'm like a fat kid duct taped to a chair with a chocolate cake in front of him. I keep looking at all of these D01's that everyone has and I want one sooooooo badly!!!

Anyways...Patient, yes that is what I will be...hold on, I must check my email to see if he wrote me yet...:blushing:

This is true. I do have two D01's. I was only asking him some questions about a possible holiday gift for my GF. I just made sure to get a head of the curve with the holiday rush on the horizon.

Although important to me, its hardly the stuff you stay awake all night over.

He will contact you, rest assured. I've ordered two Shavemacs from him in the past and he's come through both times with flying colors. Sometimes it takes a while for him to return emails depending on how busy he is, or vacation, etc.

In my opinion the finest hair he offers is an excellent bargain for the money. You can pick any handle and give him your specs on the knot and he can make it happen! He'll also send you a 'mock up' pic of the brush for your approval before he does the work.

As I often like to say... I love me some Shavemac.

the shavemac #25 can be purchased form west coast shaving. I just recieved my #25 with a 23mm knot in finest and it is a great brush. It is very soft on the face when wet but siff enough to face lather with

I would go with the finest as well. I haven't used the silvertip, but do own a D01 2-band, which is very expensive. The finest is my goto cream brush though as it is one of the softest brushes I own. I have a 20mm knot and 45mm loft, but face lather exclusively.

I think one of the stock #177 handled ones would work well for bowl lathering.

Well, thanks for the comments guys.

I sent Bernd an email. Just waiting for him to reply.

I have a 22714 (finest) and a 22580 (silvertip). They are my favorite modern brushes, hands down. Both are incredibly soft, the silvertip just ever so slightly more so, but there's not much in it.

I love my Custom D01! I face lather though so the 177 would probably be better for you. I may get one of those & John at West Coast Shaving has them available for sale.
