What's new

which intro gift razor do you give out to friends?

i've been dollar shave hunting lately, wanting to give out a couple to friends and family to get them introduced into better shaving, i first went with the big rock plastic chrome head / metal handle discussed here http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/284043-1-store-razor-concord-type-where

i figured being shiny and metal many would like it but it was too agressive for newbies so most didnt like it, i've known of dorco plastics for a while but i picked up the new model today, the PL - 510 http://badgerandblade.com/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=101002&stc=1&d=1272525401

much nicer than the original dorco which honestly looked like a cheap plastic mold, this one's head is much nicer looking, and doesn't have the dorko/y bulky head that gets in the way of a good shave, not only are the corner guards gone, the head also is concaved at the middle, which means it also doesnt get in the way under then nose etc, i really like it and even tried it out in store, the dorco platinum blades it came with also impressed me, i tried it in store and expected it to tug on dry and to my surprise it seemed very smooth, old dorco came with 10, this one has 10 platinum blades to it (st-300), i gotta say im very impressed for $1, it also seems to be the same plastic razor sold by LORD (with metal or plated? head), and Supermax (kwik)

so yes im very impressed (i hated the old ugly dorco design but it was smooth, this one is more agressive, but not something crazy, i hope newbies can handle it, so anyway, thats my 5 cents, id like to hear other opinions on it, yes i did go cheap, but thats because after giving out the big rocs, many friends didnt like it, so hopefully this one changes it, also should feel more natural since its a light plastic like most disposables, so what are other recommended cheapie razors for giving out?

btw just shaved with this thing, its very nice, the head is super low profile for under the nose, its a real nice all rounder and if i was stuck with using only this for a while, i wouldnt mind it, also, i liked the the dorco platinum blades ALOT, they are just under the astra's and that should say alot, i will put them above practically all stainless, swords, sharks, or supermax greens (picked as best supermax by many here), so a very nice razor to give out, you pay $1 for very high quality blades (10 model ST-300) and a very nice quality razor that has some bite but is well made also (not rough), these certainly make a nice gift, useful medium agression above a tech (feels manly) and look much nicer than the old dorcos with the dork head and cheap crap stainless blades

If I was going to give a razor to a friend it would be a Gillette Tech and the best blades I had at the time add to that some mild not too smelly soap and a good boar brush. I'll even throw in a bowl if I can find something suitable around the house.
I mean real friends not just folks I know; the sort of friends that would help me get rid of a body and not ask questions.
Don't Feather make a cheap plastic DE razor called the Popular? Comes with Feather blades too I think.
I found this thread
http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/24087-Feather-Popular-Safety-Razor

If I were to try to convince friends to switch, I'd probably want to start them out with something fairly decent (yet still inexpensive). The Feather Popular was mentioned before as was the Tech. While I've never used a Popular before, I can speak for the tech. The Techs are well built, shave well, and can be found for little or nothing. The last thing I'd want to do is start a friend off with a bad kit. Otherwise, your plan would backfire. Another option would be to simply lend them one of your own razors under the stipulation that they return it once they try it out for a bit. A little scrubbing bubbles & you're all set.

I'd give either a Tech, or the Weishi that was my first DE. Have a few old types I might give out too, but probably only after I gave them some time on the Tech/Weishi.

I have the same problem when trying to convert people - ideally I would like to gift them a gillette tech but they aren't that common here - have recently ordered a derby butterfly to see if that would do. Other one I have considered is the plastic wilkinson sword - but have yet to try it.

Where do you pick up the plastic dorcos - anywhere online ?

cheers

My nephew when he turned 15 received from me a Superspeed I had replated, plus Kent soap in bowl (MWF) and silvertip brush. He tried his dads foam and disposable a couple of times and decided he preferred my set, so result!

mmm just found the mundial classic at the shoebox - seems to be quite a good tech clone for a sharp price.

For closer friends I have been picking up flare tips (because I like them :)) - but want something new looking for the guys you just want to convert but don't know well enough to pester into it.

Gave my friend a very clean flair tip superspeed, the VDH kit, and I think some Derby blades. He's been using it since. The superspeeds are a perfect gift...easy to find, relatively cheap, and something they can use forever if they want to (several steps above a really cheap DE to get them started). I want them to stick with it, so a decent razor is a must.

Classic. I have only been able to convince one friend to actually try wet shaving with a DE razor and he is hooked now. I just let him go thru my den and pick out whatever he wanted really. I made some suggestions about which products are more user friendly and what not. He ended up using my Muhle R89, a custom brush with a TGN Finest XH 28mm and took two soaps, AOS Sandalwood and Martin de Candre. I guess he has good taste.

I didn't tell him how much any of the stuff costs until after he used it for a couple weeks and was totally hooked. Now he owns an R89 Grande and his own tub of MdC. I let him keep the brush because he wasn't sure about what he wanted for his own brush and I have another brush with the same knot alredy. Now we are working on getting his dad into it too.

I gave my girlfriend's son a 57 flair tip SS, a Duke 1 best brush, a bowl and a tube of C.O. Bigelow I also threw in 25 Red IPs. He has been wanting to try DE, so I thought I would throw this kit together for his 37th birthday. I told him about this site and Mantic 59's videos. The razor is both his mother's and my birth year razor.
