Where to get brass rod for a custom DE handle?

The master machinist at my job said he'd make me a handle or two if I could bring in some free machining brass rods, the kind meant for a lathe. I called some distributors but they only sell in bulk. I called some welding supply stores and apparently 1/2 or 5/8 inch brass rod isn't very common. Are there any other places I should be looking?

That monster might be a little tough to maneuver around the face.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll check out some local machine shops first to see if I can avoid shipping fee. I'll make sure to ask for bar stock.

Thanks,

Grainger has it. McMaster Carr also stocks various materials that would make fine handles. Even some Home Depot stores carry half inch brass round stock in short lengths (12-36"). I think you are from NJ. Be persistent, as there are likely tons of brass round stock within 30 miles of any one spot in the state.... It's not just taxes, fines, and user fees here. Unfortunately, you have to be creative to find anything else though....

For half inch brass rod stock, try any nearby music store that repairs horns. Ask if they have some. They're able to get it for a decent price. They get it for @30/yd, IIRC.

Harbor freight used to sell brass punches that were inexpensive. I bought one from there that's probably 12" in length and the diameter of a nickel so it could easily be turned down to the size you'd want for a razor handle.
