Where to buy quality furniture/sofa?

I have purchased sofas from Haverty's, Rooms to go, and Costco in the past. They all seem low quality Haverty's being a slight winner in quality.

Any suggestions on where to buy quality furniture without having to refinance my home? La-Z-boy sofas any good?

How can you tell if sofas are good quality (In the past I can tell by the longevity but that is once I purchase them)?

Also does anyone know how the furniture industry works? For example I see 100s of different companys listed on furniture that I usually never heard of. Are there a lot of companies or just a handful that make furniture (sofas)?

Are furniture outlets a good place to get decent furniture?

Where are you at? High Point, NC has some excellent stores and I believe that some of them have free delivery anywhere in the US. I've had good luck with Boyles (http://www.boyles.com/) and their Neighbor, Furnitureland South is OK.

North Carolina is the way to go. Hickory or High Pointe are the two main towns. We bought all our furniture there about 10-12 years ago and are due to head back. At Hickory, imagine a huge shopping mall, but every single store in the mall is a furniture store and all the major name brands and smaller players are there. The cost of the furniture was about half of what it would have been to buy it in our state, and the shipping cost was per 100 pounds so even that was reasonable. Those towns in NC have it all figured out to buy your furniture from them. It is worth the drive, or if you know the model of what you want to buy, the phone call.

Not sure about shipping charges, but for some extremely well-made furniture with classic, simple lines, Pompanoosuc Mills (in VT) is an excellent, albeit expensive, choice. Handmade, solid hardwood pieces that are built for a lifetime. This is not Ikea.

Just mapquested. Much too far for me :frown:

It might be a bit of a drive, but you'll save a bundle there. After moving into a new house, I needed to replace a lot of things plus get furniture that I'd never needed in an apartment. Shopping in High Point really made a difference for me. You get excellent prices on quality items. Plus, they're dying out there--business is terrible and you can probably pull down some even better than usual deals. And, like I said, I'm pretty sure that at least Boyles delivers anywhere free.
