Where to Buy a new Safety Razr

New to Safety Razr shaving. I currently use AoS oil, cream and lotion. Been for about a year. Looking to move up to the safety DE. Looking for a good place to get one and am wondering what I should look at!
Thanks.

Welcome to B&B! You came to the right place for DE Razor questions. Most here will probably steer you towards the Merkur HD, a solid choice. Aggressvie enough for a great shave, but isn't eager to cut your throat. They are readily available, check here first, if not, on line. It is different than cartridges, so take your time and enjoy the experience. Go slow with NO pressure. Like any well crafted tool, it will do the work for you. Larry

I guess I don't fall into the most category. I think you will be better served with a vintage Gillette Tech, or Superspeed.

The Edwin Jagger DE89L has also been receiving an endless amount of praise of late. It's unfortunately out of stock with most vendors.

Check these websites, they can pretty much fulfill your ever wet shaving need:

I also don't fit into the Merkur HD category (not that it is bad; just don't like it too much)

Vintage is certainly an option with the Gillette Tech as a mild and affordable choice.
Edwin Jagger and Mühle make IMO better razors than Merkur does and if you would want a nice shaving DE, new, for less, check this Lord out when you are in the US and this one when you are European.

Oh, and btw, welcome to B&B!!:thumbup1:

+1

Both of those Lord razors are excellent choices. It's the shave of a Merkur for 1/4 the cost!!

I have owned both of those, and they both shave great. The European one with the metal handle is one of my favorite razors; it's a wonderful razor, that just happens to be value priced. :thumbup1:

Thanks for all the advice. So basically Im gonna do some research today, but Im looking for something that I think Ill use for a couple years and be happy with. Although I know Ill get into it and want to try new razors all the time, I want to try and avoid the outlay of cash.

Ok so tto = Twist to Open. Does that mean its the type that opens at the top like window shutters instead of the entire top coming off? Whats the benefit of each? Pro's & Cons?

Correct.

The main benefit of the TTO mechanism is that it makes it slightly safer to change out the blade, as you have to handle the blade far less. The trade off, is that this makes the head bulkier, and thus harder to shave tight areas.

The TTO mechanism also means the razor has moving parts, which can wear out over time.

A standard 3 piece razor (in which the top cap separates from the bottom plate, and the blades goes between the two pieces) has no moving parts, and is thus built like a tank. Short of dropping it repeatedly, there is really nothing that can go wrong with it. It also has the benefit of having a smaller head, which makes it easier to get into tighter areas.

I personally view the TTO mechanism as a solution to a problem that didn't exist: you have to be a pretty big moron to continually cut yourself while loading the blade into your three piece razor.

I can see cutting yourself once, but after that I can guarantee you will have learned your lesson, and will thereafter handle the blade with extreme care.

I was wondering about this exact thing. Who are these people that are cutting themselves?

The TTO wasn't a solution to people cutting themselves while changing blades, it was created for convenience and ease of blade changing.

To the OP, just buy a Gillette Tech or a Gillette SuperSpeed. Either one can be purchased for under $20 and both will give you, with proper care, a lifetime of great shaves. I have TTO razors that are 50+ years old and there is no sign that the mechanism is close to wearing out.

Great advice here, and truer words never spoken IMO.

For me the appeal of the TTO is not one of safety. It is rather a blend of magic and wonder.

I hold it up in front of me halfway to the mirror and turn the magic knob and behold the wonder of the opening doors.

Check the "reviews" forum to get some more information on the choices available. However, this might give you a case of information overload!
If you go down the vintage route you should be able to find something easily in the B/S/T area. You'll benefit from a proper, accurate description of what you're getting (unlike some sellers on ebay) and you won't get drawn into a bidding war, so you'll be able to keep to your budget.

For new stuff I would get a merkur off classicshaving.com.
Why do you need a brand new razor, the vintage stuff usually shaves a lot better and is cheaper and available here

Thanks Disturben! Thats What I did! I just picked up a Gillette SS from David in Boston here! He hooked me up with what I think is a great deal. I havent shaved with it yet, I'll let you know how it goes. He also showed me around a couple local shops in Cambridge, and introduced me to the famous vegetal! Thanks David, look forward to chatting with you again!
