Where do you put your hat while dining out?

Used to be that there was a hat rack or shelf in most restaurants and diners. These days I often find myself trying to keep my hat on my knee or in my lap as there's just no safe place for it. Sometimes I've even gone back out to the car to leave it on the seat. Anybody have any suggestions?

Cloak room?
If the restaurant isn't equipped to take coats and hats, then the car seems to be the safest bet.

If there's an open chair next to me I'll rest it on that. Otherwise, I try to keep it on my knee or lap, but eventually it will find it's way off during the meal :(.

Restaurants need to bring back the hat rack!

I agree cause I always take off my hat to eat even at a fast food joint but always have to keep it on my knee luckily though baseball caps rest well on your knee.

If there is no place to put it, like a rack or empty seat, I'll either put a napkin on the deck under my chair and set it there, or ask the waiter to take it.

I've heard of small hooks on strings that are designed to slip over a chair and give the hat a home...

Now that would be interesting. :001_smile

That made me think of the Purse hook my wife uses. It folds flat, and when you use it, the end sits on the table, and the purse hangs from the hook underneath. Might work for a hat.
Lots of different styles and designs.

Dang nowhere to put my hat, "Hey buddy, here have a hat".

You must go through a lot of hats

Hey, just spreading the wealth.

Really, if there is any choice I admit I'll ask a waitress or hostess to take care of it for me. It can start some interesting conversations.

"I can't find a place to park this. Can you find a spot for this while we eat?"

"Certainly. Oh, this is soft, what's it made out of?"

"Rabbit fur, if you can believe that."

"I'm going to get my boyfriend a real hat, more men should wear them. I think they look great. I noticed your hat when you came in."

"I guess I should say thank you."

"Just let me know when you are ready, and I'll bring it to you. Enjoy your meal."

WIFE: "Is it going to fit when you get it back? You probably reminded her of her grandfather, you know..."

Difficult to say...in car? Well why did you bring it? On the nearest chair? The waiter just stumble on the hat...nice!! a grease stain inside the crown!! Can you just put it the closer? Nice, was mishandled, two grease dots on the pinch and the brim distorted...Best place? On your head or knee under the table.

Couldn't you just cut a small hole in each side and tie a string through both sides and then put it around your neck and then you can just pull it off and it will hang around your neck.

That works if you're 3. Just don't tuck your jeans in your boots at the same time.

Most of the time my hat just stays on my knee. :blushing:

Since moving to North Carolina I found many more restaurants that have hat and coat hooks by the door. When I do use them I try to sit where I can still see my hat.

Doesn't Lyle Lovett sing a song about this very issue ... ?

And, if no other options present themselves, sometimes on the table is better than under, because there's (usually) no gum stuck to the top of the table (against which one might accidentally brush one's hat-laden knee).

So maybe the fact that I consider such issues indicates that I don't eat at the classiest places, but I've got to go with my own experience here ...

... I'm just sayin' ...
