Where did birth year shavers come from?

Where did the concept of wanting a shaver made in ones year of birth come from? Is that something that just comes from this forum or is it wider spread than that? Why this concept? Thanks.

Funny, I'd never heard of that before regarding any other gear. For some reason it holds no appeal for me although I generally need even less of an excuse than that to buy something :)

I'd never come across the idea before I came to this forum, but I like it. It's nice to have something I regularly use that's the same age as me, but which is clearly lasting better :biggrin1:

In my case I had a few to choose from, and my prize is a birth quarter fatboy. I also got a birth year TV Superspeed and, I think, a bluetip SS (I have a red and a blue, and one is my birth year - I can't remember which).

It's nice to shave on your birthday with a razor that is as old as you are.

Since these are rather inexpensive (compared to a vintage auto) someone can have several different models of birth year razors.

Not with wives.

Half your age seems to do the trick.

I wish!

I think it is nostalgia. Like finding a newspaper, music, etc. from your birth year. I was born in 1957 and always dreamed of owning cars of that era ('57 Chevy Belaire, Corvette, T-Bird, etc). It's quite a bit for affordable and achievable to find a birth year razor. I like the idea of shaving with a razor that was "born" when I was.

It's just another excuse to chase a purchase. I bought a birth year motorcycle. You can justify anything to yourself if you try hard enough.

Not with wives.

Actually, my wife and I are practically the same age; I'm 34 days older. We met in eighth grade, dated in 11th and 12th, broke up, ended up at the same college, got engaged junior year, married two years after graduation, just celebrated our 20th anniversary last spring. So there!

On the other hand, I admit that a birth quarter Fatboy would be nice.

i'm a 1984 baby, Gillette was still making the black handled SS then, but to me the razor just doesn't look cool enough. the black handle i'm assuming is plastic...i don't want a plastic DE razor, especially when I ditched the plastic Gillette garbage a year ago. I'd only take one if it was completely NOS, but i'm not on the hunt or anything.
