When you shave, do you use both sides of the blade?

I generally shave with one side of the blade for 4 days, then flip the blade and use the other side for 4 days. I have seen several on shaving videos use both sides of the blade while shaving. Anyone else do this method and if so why?

I am not sure what you are saying...
Do you shave four days, then remove the blade, flip it over then shave another four days?

I think he means both edges. And yes, I use both edges while shaving. I just flip it every time I rinse (which I do after doing a "quadrant" of my face). I'd expecting using both sides while shaving is very common. I can only say what I do though...

I use both edges during a shave, but not with any regular pattern. I'd never be able to keep track if I tried to only use one edge for a certain number of shaves.

If he was talking about flipping the blade from one side to the other, then that is pointless, because a blade only has two cutting edges, regardless of which side of the blade is up.

Definitely both edges alternate during each shave. I would also not be able to keep track. Unless you're talking about flipping blade after 4 days.

Yes I use both edges. This is actually one of my favorite outlets for my OCD. My beard pattern is symmetrical, so I assign an edge to a side of my face. Then do a XTG/ATG/ATG 3 pass shave.

Based on what he said about the shaving videos - "using both sides of the blade while shaving" - I'm pretty sure he's talking about using both edges. I can't imagine anyone removing and flipping the blade over during a shave.

I think he is saying he turns the blade over top to bottom.

My merkur 180 seems to have differences in the sides to how the blade sits. One side, more of the blade is shown and I find that side to be better at doing the first pass and getting a closer shave. The other side where less blade is shown I use less often so I usually flip the blade after 2 shaves.

I assume he means that he uses one edge for four days and then the other for four days.

To answer the question yes I do use both sides as I shave and I think that is probably the most common way.

Odd. One side of your razor should not have either more blade exposure or more blade gap. If it does, it sounds like there is a defect or some other type of damage to the head. I started with the same razor and am back to using the head with a different handle. Great shaver.

Back on topic. I make a couple of passes with one side of the blade and as it fills with lather flip over to the other side. I have certain things that I am OCD about, but counting the number of passes with each side of the blade is not one of them. With blade buffing and how I have to alternate stroke lengths for different parts of my face, I could never keep it straight. I usually take the blade out of the razor and pat it dry, so it may not always go back into the razor in the same orientation, but I don't flip it on purpose. I doubt it would serve any real purpose, at least as far as I understand blade performance.

+1. This is what I do. I only flip the blade over in the razor between shaves if I felt the blade losing smoothness during the last shave. Sometimes this trick will give me an extra couple of shaves from a blade.
