When/Why did Moustaches become creepy?

I'm a fan of the beardstache:

I think it was towards the end of the '80s. Plenty of women back in the day certainly didnt think Tom Selleck was creepy.
They certainly do now though. I know that my wife gets weirded out if I dont keep my mustache trimmed up. If it starts to hang over my lip, she hates it.
Its a shame too because Id be all about growing a big, epic mustache but Im also not all about creeping my wife out.

I've noticed in general people are kind of eh. But individually, that's different. If it's a neat trim full stache, usually a conservative style, worn with confidence, there's usually no problem. But sadly, the most common ones around here are scrawny caterpillars.

Lots of mustaches w all the hipsters nowadays. I would agree w many of the comments-70s and porn...I would also add that the gay leather scene probably didn’t win many mainstream fans to the stache.

I think it became a thing when you started seeing pics of serial killers with porn star staches. :D The only folks I ever saw that actually made a bushy stache look good were Tom Selleck and Sam Elliott. My wife definitely agrees with that (as does every female I know)

Also Burt Reynolds, Nick Offerman, Jay Chandransetta, William H. Macy, any 70s hard rock bassist. Wear it thick and full and unapologetically and it'll work.

Been a Stache wearer my whole life.
Cops, pornstars, and tradesmen.
Not the worst company to be in.
:)

I could grow a great beard in high school, but my work only allowed a stache. Went that way for a few years until I was no longer restricted. I've shaved back to that point about 4 times in 28 years

I believe I saw pornstache but did not see pedismile mentioned? Around here generally categorized as a porn star, cop, or pedifile with a mustache alone. I wore a mustache for a while and thought it was fine. (years ago) I looked back at some pics and thought "what was I thinking". Not sure if my opinion changed due to "style" or stigma. Now it is mustache with goatee or full beard depending on time of year.

I'm an old dude but I had one in college. Looking back on it, it didn't look particularly good even back then.

It didn't exactly look creepy back then but it didn't look good. Now, I agree, they do look creepy.

There's a (nice) guy at my climbing gym who works with kids (teaching them how to climb). He has a bald head and recently he was grown a mustache. He didn't look creepy before, now he does.

I was watching They Shall Not Grow Old last night and while there were more clean-shaven men than not, mustaches were still fairly common and not a single one looked creepy. I wonder if it's the style of mustache, if they were better cared for back then, or if I've just been socialized to accept mustaches on men from bygone eras. As I watched it made me realize that I couldn't think of a single instance of a creepy mustache on anyone prior to 1960 in any old photographs I came across. I suspect grooming is the main culprit, as facial hair was better well kept before clean-shaven became the norm, but I can't be certain.

I love a good moustahce. Specifically the handlebar variety. Even sported one last year before i shaved it off for a change in look ( picture attached ).

But am i crazy or have moustaches of any kind gotten a bad rep in the last one decade or so, especially after the stubble/beard boom came about? There is this whole ‘moustaches are creepy’ vibe that seems to be around. Here I’m talking about guys who support moustaches alone, and not just with a beard.

Any thoughts on why/when it happened? I’m 33 currently so i wasn’t around during the 60s and 70s, but simply going by images of the time reveal that moustaches were much common at the time, and i assume, considered the fashionable thing to do.

I grew up in Pakistan before moving to Canada later on, and Pakistan and perhaps the whole of South Asia, is still very moustache friendly. They are essentially the go to form of facial hair for most men there, so i found the difference in perception towards facial hair in opposite parts of the world quite interesting.

Any thoughts on this matter? Especially people who lived through the 70s or so?

I think it depends on the person. Some people are creepy and they may also have a moustache...but I wouldn't necessarily blame the moustache. Its more likely the person that's creepy.

I have never thought about it. They were quite popular in the 60’s and 70’s though. A
Good friend of mine has a stash but you are right, not a lot of them around. Perhaps they don’t go with the currently popular homeless look.
