When I started straight razor shaving a few years ago I started off with a small board strop (which I still take with me when I travel) and a newspaper strop for drying my blade post shave. Then I purchased a hanging strop and I have restored a couple of hanging strops as well. I also have a paddle strop that I use on occasion. Small difference I know, but I usually put my board strop flat on a bench or table -- the paddle is held in hand and angled. I realize as much as I enjoy a hanging strop I really like the stability a paddle or board strop provides.

What is your preference? Board, hanging, or paddle?

Hanging. It flexes. I have a board for travel that has thin maple blades raised from either side of a strong center board to provide some flex. My hanging strip is 3” wide and I think 17” long. I cannot fathom anything better.

I use hanging and only use the paddles for my pastes if I choose to use them so I don't contaminate my strops.

Speaking of horse butts…
Hanging strops for razors, and I like pasted strops far more than stones. Not for everyone but they work for me with the right touch. For my woodworking tools everything gets touched up regularly on pasted strops as well as my pocket knives. For paddles I like the hardest horsebutt I can get.
