What's new

What's the verdict on the G5 scuttle?

I've read most of the reviews and threads on shaving scuttles, and it seems Dirty Bird, Moss, and Schwarzweiss seem to hold the advantage over the Georgetown one. But they're advanced now to model G5, and it seems they've developed the product for quite bit.

So is the Georgetown scuttle still inferior to it's competitors? I love how it looks (ivory and green oribe, yum!), the colours and glazing are really something. And even with shipping to Europe it has an attractive price too, thanks to the Euro-USD rate.

But it's no good simply as an ornament, it also has to work as required. So I am still undecided. I guess if I don't go for the Georgetown scuttle, I will choose the Schwarzweiss one. Anyone used the G5, and how did you like it?

Also interested-about to pull the trigger. Were there problems with the previous generation or service from Georgetown?

As I can see, that you are from Finland, you might be able to read a little Danish.:wink2:
If so, you ought to take a look for scuttles here as well: www.proshave.dk
Or even better: http://www.proshave.dk/forum/proshave-scuttles-paa-vej.aspx

I imagine my Danish is only slightly better than your Finnish?:001_smile

I did notice that the website is selling a FINNISH 'shaving bowl', the Iittala origo! :scared:

If I want to buy overpriced Finnish design, I can do it locally... nah, just kidding. I noticed the scuttle mentioned on the forum link you so kindly proviced. It look interesting, and if I am not mistaken it's around 40 euros (299 Dkr) when it comes out?

I've had one since Christmas and have used it daily. I like it a lot, but it is the only scuttle I've owned. My routine is to fill my kettle and start it heating. Then I fill my sink with hot water and soak my scuttle and brush. When the kettle is boiling I fill the scuttle and start making lather. On a three pass shave the first pass of lather is very hot, he second is hot, and the third is very warm.

Good luck!

I have a G5 scuttle, that works well for me.. to be fair, tis not 'a lot' better than just putting a coffee mug in a bowl of hot water, but its a LOT more convenient and looks much better! It lathers up well, and the rubber stopper seems to hold heat better than leaving it out, though I don't pretend that the lather stays very warm.. the first 2 passes are quite nice, it helps to 'preheat' the scuttle with very hot water first, then empty and refill for your actual shave.. I am satisfied with it, but its the only true scuttle that I own.

I have the Blue-Hamada G5. It's also the only scuttle I own. I only use hot tap water so the lather isn't very warm. It is, however, the best lather bowl I've tried and the inner lip does a good job of keeping the lather in the bowl. I'm very happy with it. It looks beautiful and I get a good lather. If warm lather is your #1 priority, you may want to check out other scuttles. There are some threads from late last year which indicate other scuttles retain heat better.

I've had 2 Georgetown scuttles, and both were very good. I had no problems with either the G4 which I still have or the G5 which I just sold. Both worked excellent. I sold the G5 because SWMBO didn't want it out because it didn't match our bathroom re-do. The G5 has a different ridge pattern than the G4, but both worked just fine, and kept the lather nice and warm. :001_tongu :001_rolle

I love my G5, it certainly is gorgeous, but it is just a tad too small for me to lather in. I have lathered in it about a dozen times, and I get acceptable results, but not the volume of lather I get if I use my large cereal bowl instead.

Hm, I had not considered volume. Are you saying that it's easier to form the volume of lather in the cereal bowl than in the G-town scuttle, if using the same amount of cream/soap? Or just that you need more lather for your shave that can possible fit in the G-town scuttle?

It seems that you experienced shavers make huge amount of lather, from beginner's point of view? So how many times you shave your whiskers at one sessions (this is the 'passes' term, right?)

I have the G5 and in the end the amount of water it holds, about 5 oz just isn't enough to keep lather warm very long. I recently got one from Oskar in Germany and his holds 15oz of water and it keeps things warm a very long time. That's the bottom line for me.

I have a G4 and have no problems with either building a great lather with it or keeping it adequately warm. No direct experience with the G5 but I imagine it would not be too different.

As with all things, YMMV..

I have the G5, the large Moss and the DB 1.5X. In my opinion, the Moss and DB are superior to the G5. I did a temperature test and the G5 consistently holds water at 20+ degrees cooler than the other two. I also find the DB much easier to whip lather in due to the larger size and the deeper grooves in the bowl.

The G5 is probably the nicest looking one, but I feel it performs least well.

I have a G5 and have never used the other scuttles, so I can't make a direct comparison. However, the G5 (fill with hot water while I strop, then dump and refill reservoir) keeps my lather warm for three passes. The center chamber does feel a bit small, but I find that if I push the rising lather back down it improves in consistency.

I don't know that it's the best scuttle out there, but I can say that I recommend it.

After reading this thread today I decided to test my G5 with water heated to boiling in the microwave. Up to now I have been using just hot tap. Changed from my usual creams to Tabac for today's shave and the lather stayed warm for at least three passes. That was pretty good considering my bathroom is the coldest room in the house. I don't doubt that others are better, but I still don't feel any urge to switch. YMMV.

I just broke the handle of my G5 scuttle (never try to rinse it off in a hurry..!).. it is only the handle and looks to be fixable, but if I want a warmer lather that I whip up in the scuttle, would you recommend the moss or DB?

Agreed. I have a GT V5, small Moss and a 1.5 DB. MY DB's inner bowl holds 20 oz of water while the GT holds 6 oz. I use the Moss when I face lather, I will use the GT in the summer months when I will not care so much about warm lather. I like all of these scuttles, but if you want warm lather , go with the DB or the Moss!

Dagnabbit, my brother ordered me the G5 in hamada and blue for me birthday! :w00t:

So I guess I don't have to agonise which brand or colour to choose... there, it's a good idea to tell your folks all about your new hobbies, so they get sick of hearing about it.:001_rolle
