whats the low down with SRD bulg rose

I have checked all the major shaving forums and haven't seen a review for the Bulg Rose. I know it contains a very high price tag due to the expensive oils in it.

I have seen it on the BST a good many times, mostly only used once so I am thinking that it might not live up to the hype for some people.

I am interested in buying this soap, but I want to get some opionions from some of the guys that have used it here to see if I see any patterns. The price for this soap is obviously expensive and I am not a rich man yet.

I am mainly interested in performance and not so much scent

Thanks guys

What I understand it is highly concentrated in scent. Therefore, some gents have a sensitivity to high Essential Oils/Fragrance Oils. It can cause skin irritation.

I have never used or owned the SRD Bulgarian Rose; however, I do have QED Wild Rose, which is somewhat in the same vein (both are melt-and-pour soaps with a lot of scent - SRD is EO based, whereas QED is FO based). I have heard a good many things about the SRD Bulgarian Rose soap in various threads. My guess is you are paying $40 for scent and $10 for "performance", so based on your comment this probably isn't the soap for you.

EDIT: I just checked the SRD site and you can get a tub of unscented SRD soap for $8, so assuming the tub of Bulgarian Rose is the same size/volume, then you would be paying $42 for an out of this world scent and $8 for soap:001_smile

The wife bought the SRD Bulgarian Rose for me for Father's Day this year. I'm a big fan of floral scents & absolutely love the natural rose scent of this soap. It fills the bathroom & all the way down the hall when I use it. It's a very luxurious experience. The soap is a very good performer, being melt & pour as mentioned earlier, the lather springs forth without much coaxing. The glycerine base makes for a very slick lather. I absolutely love this soap. I pair it with the Savory Rose ASM from SCS or with Florida Water for a nice floral finish. Very highly recommended.

I have this soap. For a melt-and-pour soap, it's truly a luxurious experience. The soap is crammed w/real rose EO, and something about the EO really affects the quality of the lather. It's much richer, silkier & more moisturizing than the lather you'd normally get from a glycerin-based soap; even the more high-end soaps produced by QED or Mama Bear fall short, quality-wise. And the fragrance, of course, is an added bonus. It's a true, earthy rose that surrounds you & suffuses the room with its essence.

Interesting responses so far.

Obviously the only way for me to find out if I like it is to buy it. Since I have a major addiction right now, I will probably go ahead and buy it in the near future.

However, for 50 cash plus shipping I can buy 3 high quality soaps. Hell, 2 Palmolive shave stick cost me 6 dollars shipped from the UK from a friend, and they are pretty damn good.

How many people believe that this "special" oil really increases the quality of the lather and performance?

I used the SRD Bay Rum last night and got a bit of irritation - partly due to other issues apart from the soap. Whenever I use the Bulgarian Rose - I always get an excellent shave and far better lather than the other 2 SRD EO soaps.

I put the shave from this soap as almost par with MWF - the SRD Bulgarian is easier to lather though.

THis may just be subjective or that I take more care in the prep when using wonderfully expensive or luxurious soaps? :001_smile

My wife is quite the fragrance connoisseur and she thinks it smells very very good.

It doesn't matter "how many" people believe it. Everyone's skin is different. Yours might react beautifully w/this soap. Or it might not. Only one way to find out, isn't there. :001_cool:

If you want to listen to opinions, people will either tell you to go for it or that you've gotta be nuts to pay that much for a melt 'n pour soap, ingredients be damned. But it's ultimately your call, isn't it.

i guess at this point, I am just trying to make myself feel better and prep myself for my future purpose. I have been at this long enough to know I need to try out a product!!

It is a good quality soap and if you like rose, it is the cherry on top of the ice ceam. I'm a tallow guy but this is the one glycerin soap I use regularly.
