What's new

What's on your work bench right now?

Wow, Ian. That's cool!

Thank you, Sir!!!

The bit that makes it hard work is this is a single piece of pearl slab for each side now comes the fun, as you cannot get it like that any more it's going to have to be in sections. So I'm thinking of 3 sections to a side with a silver spacer as it has a silver backing plate, then you have to match the pearl and then there is the cost for real pearl.

But it should look nice when finished.

I got this Apollo NOS a while ago and kept it boxed until I had time to give it some attention.
The problem I had with it was that the blade was way to nice for the standard black plastic scales it came with.
I rescaled it today in bone, with a Sequoia wedge.
Voila:

The blade still had its factory edge, but I figured after 50 years or so, it might need some touching up. So I put it on the Goyumko 20K while I was at it.

Savage & sons 7/8 half hollow, circa 1840!
Macassar Ebonywood scales with MOP wedge and big ol whopper nickel Greaves style collars.

Now this one was a challenge. Under its initial layer of crud it was basically NOS, aside from a couple of rust spot that I very carefully removed as to preserve the original grind marks. But the REAL tricky part is that when Savage or one of his sons inserted the blade to do the grind, they didn't do it straight.. I don't mean off at an angle, I mean like twisted almost 15 degrees with their wrist then went straight in. The blade is straight and perfect but not in relation to the tang! Thankfully a little magic and BAM! Got it to close almost dead center anyway.
This thing is a beast. And it's really really old.
It is an old magnificent beast.
