What's new

What's on your work bench right now?

Alan those should come up beautiful, the bottom one you might need to bush the pin hole back down to the 1/16th as it looks on the larger size. It is going to look stunning once done back into horn scales.

That's going to look a mighty fine razor when done, what have you got planned for It horn or acrylic.

Thank you. I love my ring‘s and this one will get a light wood scales with dark grain. My other ring is scaled in giraffe bone.

Yep I can see that I love the giraffe bone handle has a nice pattern to it, but I only have 2 Hamburg Ring razors both have been cleaned one has new scales. Both are not the same maker.

Thank you Ian. Yes the grain in the wood is beautiful. I restored and honed the blade months ago but was not sure what I wanted to use. The rubberwood caught my eye and I am very happy with the result.

Initial cleanup on this Karbon King. Concerned about all the pitting. Did a short progression of 120 -> 180 -> 320 -> 400 grit wheels and then some polishing compounds just to get an idea of where it's at. Any input would be appreciated.

My personal opinion is that there's still a way to go. I'd be nervous about all the "bumps" and what's happening in there. I'd be tempted to sand it all down to be sure it's solid steel.

And it looks like some serious pitting on and near the bevel on both sides. You may find that honing it will require removing a lot of steel to get past the pitting.

I think you've got your work cut out for you, but it could end up being a nice shaver. Best of luck!

Good stuff! Looking into getting a ball peen hammer, brass rod and washers to put it back together. Will disassemble and put it some more work.

I was bored this afternoon so I pulled the Bismarck out that I just got last week, stripped it down and gave it a quick clean up to be fair this one was not to bad.

So here is the razor before

Just honed her up so she is ready for tonights shave...

Progress, though not sure if it's the right progress. Removed about every bump near the bevel minus one. Got a smile, shortest bit comes out to a 17 degree angle.

Thinking I'll hone at 45 degrees or so to get at least a good bit of smile out of it and then get some scales (probably the DIY from whipped dog) and give it a go.

Curious to hear any feedback.20191216_042654.jpg20191216_042659_HDR.jpg20191216_042703.jpg20191216_042711.jpg20191216_042716.jpg20191216_042723.jpg

Hmmm not sure but I think that blade may have a crack in it see the pic below

crack.jpg

The reason is it is showing up on both sides of the blade, I hope I'm wrong

Confirmed the crack in the Karbon King. Set it aside.. Might try one day to trim it down to an incredibly small mustache/sideburn razor but for now switched razors.

Unpeened, cleaned, polished and repeened a M Jung 80 and Union Spike. First attempts at repeening and both lean to one side. They dont catch the edge but it is reallly close.

Hey buddy just a reminder. I did tell you twice the karbon king had a crack in the blade. That I sent that to you so you had a blade to practice honing with so you didn't have to use a good blade to practice with. I'm glad you are having fun with the M. Jung and the spike. The are both looking good.

I do recall. No worries.

As practice razor hone it up and learn they are good to do that, thas is what I did, but I started in a different way to everyone else I blame the Gold Dollar Mod Contest 2 years ago 2017.

I went in big-time modding a razor making scales and honing all on the same razor, talk about falling in at the deep end. It's nice to see more members in here learning this hobby, I have had hours upon hours of fun and the more you do the better you get at it.

And never be too shy to ask for advice, that comes free even if it sounds silly to yourself trust me it ain't to us.
