What's new

What's on your work bench right now?

Ok had some time to finish the work with the bog oak scales.
My first idea was to refit the CV Heljestrand MK 30 on them, but that wasn't going to happen.
The MK 30 is a 4/8 and the scales is for a 5/8. So i had to rethink what was going on those scales.
The Johan Hengström just cried out to get some new scales, the old was some cardboard material that just wasn't right for that old razor. So the the work started to refit the Johan Engström and give some dignity back to the old chap.
This is the outcome.
The next thing is to hone the Engström up on a jnat mikawa progression and testshave, maybe buff the blade up a bit before. But it is as good as done.

Helped out a member with his Pipe Razor this weekend. I think he will be very happy.

I have a couple of Nakiri's I want to profile and prep for heat treat and a kamisori, which will be my first time dabbling into full hollow grinding and razor making in general.

Ok that is going all in. Start from nothing and make a razor, Respect!
Would be cool to be able to do that, i suspect it is a million variables to control.
Post pics of your progress or some video if you can. I would like to see the process from raw material to finished product.

Best regards
Mackis

Two razors rough profiled and three kitchen knives. Razors will get ground 80% before heat treat, the kitchen knives will not since the bar stock is so thin to begin with. Those designs need to be prepped for heat treat and that means taking them up to 320 grit across the board as well as holes drilled for pin stock.

Thank you, thank you lol. It started as just a razor to hone but I let the owner know that it was a really good razor in pretty good shape and that I could get it polished up nicely and he agreed.
Seeing the result it's not much to think of. Prepair for him coming with a bag of razors :)

Thank you, I wouldn't mind restoring another bag of razors haha.

Finally took the time to get the centering issue on my W&B restore corrected, ended up being a bad pivot washer.

Ok starting a new project.
That is to make new handles to my 15/16 WB The celebrated razor.
It is all honed up and nice, but i don't like the plastic scales it has now.
Feels that the razor is worth better handles than that.
I have some lovely golden streaked horn material that i will use. Will be posting the progress and the ready result here. Before pics below.

Base material and a first shaping.
Now a wedge need to be made. It will be some old key again that will serve as wedge.

The wedge is starting to shape up and the scales are sanded with 2k grit sandpaper.
test fitting will follow and final shaping/sanding will be done before peening.

I will probably need to thing the scales a bit during the test fitting, but i want to wait and see with the blade in place, it is after all a quite big and heavy blade 15/16" so it's better to be on the safe side to avoid cracked scales. Any suggestions? More shaping and thinning? Ordinary or domed brass washers/collars? I'm also thinking of brass domed washers with silver pin for the contrast or vice versa.

Ok after lots of himmmin and hawwwwing and very little spare time i decided to just get started. I picked 3 and figured lets see how bad they are; after a bit of polishing to remove years of grime im glad to see that with a little buffing and polishing these will clean up well. I may have to make some new scales for GW&S but the brass spine is in wonderful shape!
