What Type Of Metal Is A Gillette DE Made From?

Hello every one. I have a 1957 Gillette SS and a Gillette Tech razor. I would like to know if the razors are chrome plated or are they made of stainless steel? I would like to clean them up and polish them a bit because they are dull looking. Thank you for the help. :)

They are nickel plated brass - not stainless. Aggressive polish will take the plating right off - so be very gentle. Search the forums for cleaning methods.

Just in case you were wondering, Merkur razors are made out of pot metal.

You can clean your Gillette's using Scrubbing Bubbles, and an old toothbrush.

The Gillettes are made from Leprechauns Gold, forged in a furnace of Diamonds, and plated with Sterling Silver scraped from the wings of Fairies.

Merkurs are made from Mighty Putty and Spray Painted with Aluminum Paint.

Thanks for the help. Knowing that I will not do the cleaning I was thinking of. If it was pure stainless steel I was going to buff it but knowing it is plated I will not do that. Also knowing the LORD is pot metal I will make sure it is dried well because I know how pot metal ends up on an older car because of my dad's 1961 Ford Galaxie. Thanks for the help folks. :)

Actually, I was trying to make a point that the Vintage Gillette's being made of plated brass are of a higher quality, than the modern day Merkur's which are made from plated pot metal (or a similar cheap alloy).

I am not 100% sure, but I would suspect the head of the LORD is indeed plated pot metal as well. The handle would appear to be Aluminum though. :thumbup1:

And all along, I've been assuming the Gillettes were made from unobtainium!
