Please indulge me with a little story. Before I started wet-shaving, I
had gone through a beard-mustache phase (I still might grow back my
mustache). I found a great barber in the the suburbs of Tokyo but actually
quite far from my Yokohama apartment. It actually takes me 75-90
minutes to get to his shop but he is a third-generation barber with
mad skills, especially when it comes to facial hair. In any case, I try
to visit him when I can, despite the distance and time commitment.
His three-towel wet shave is amazing. And my beard and/or 'stache
never looked better. In fact, the very reason I started wet-shaving was to
try to replicate the incredibly smooth BBS from his shave. It takes three
days to even feel stubble.

This week, I took two days off from my SR routine to get the full effect of his
shaving technique. However, I screwed up on the train transfer and arrived
twenty minutes late. This barber is in high demand and he told me that he
did not have time to shave me but could still give me a haircut. I was crestfallen,
but understood as his next customer arrived shortly after I crossed his doorway.
I was quite upset with myself but resigned to fate and promised myself that
I would never let this happen again.

The barber probably sensed my distress and gave me a great neck massage at
end of the haircut. He also gave me a discount. On my way out, he said "David,
wait..." Then he pulled out a puck of Antica Barberia Mundial and said "Here is
a little something. I know that you came a long way." This is not high-end
shaving soap like ABC but I will love the scent and the sentiment everytime
I use it.

Hanamasa Kamisori
A&E Vanille de Tabac shaving soap
High Mountain White knot

This one came in as "unknown maker" but I was able to track the Kanji down to Hamamasa, a blade master that worked in Tamahagane and Yasuki steel. This one is Yasuki steel and I estimate that it was made in the mid 1900s. I sure wish I had the Tamahagane. The razor came in shave ready and did well on the HHT. But it seemed to tug a bit. I chalk this up to the fact it was my first kamisori shave. The shave was close, but left a patch or two that was less than close. I think I need to learn the shave angles here. They differ depending on the side being used. Mostly I used the omote side and I suspect my angle was too shallow. But I did enjoy the clean handling with no scales to deal with. I will touch this one up on my JNAT and continue "experimenting".
