What's new

What should my next razor be?

I currently have three DE Razors and two straights in my collection. I am fine with my two straights but have been itching to buy another DE, maybe two. The DEs are a Futur, Gold Tech, and a Shaving Company TTO that I picked up at Sally's. I use DE's two or three times a week and mix it up pretty evenly getting each of them in the game. The Futur gives me the best shave of the three but the head is very large and sometimes cumbersome to get at those hard to reach places like the corners of my mouth and under my nose. It also makes it hard to keep the correct angle when I shave ATG on my neck. I love the size of the Tech's head but its so darn mild I feel like the blade doesn't touch my skin at times and I'm just dragging the safety bar across my face. The advice I'm looking for is what razor, or razors, give me the aggressiveness and heft of the Futur but a smaller head like my tech. I have seen good reviews about the EJ razors and I was also looking at the Merkur classic, the 34C I think it is. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you go stainless steel... I would go for a Weber. For an adjustable, go with the Merkur Progress. For something different... I would go with a Merkur slant. Any of the three provide great shaves. Also, if you do not like any of the three razors, you can always sell it on B/S/T. I can guarantee that once you post any of the three razors that it will be sold within 5 minutes.

I'm sure you've read enough reviews on the 34C, that I don't need to chime in, but I got mine...idk...a month or so ago and couldn't be more satisfied with it. Good weight. Good shave. My experience with DE is limited, but thought I'd add my 2 cents.

How about your Gillette Tech loaded with an aggressive Feather blade? That will pump up the mildness to medium aggression.

How about a German built Muhle R89? Awesome chrome, design, and quality, and a close and COMFORTABLE shave.

And if you want to go vintage, how about a Gillette NEW Improved from the 1920s in genuine silver?

You have some outstanding options to consider![/

If you feel that you should feel consider yourself pushed into a Merkur 34c thing?

Consider yourself pushed from my behalf...

34c is an icon, even here.

I've just acquired 3 vintage gillette adjustables in the last four weeks. A black beauty, fat boy and a slim. I'm using Astras and feathers and they're all great razors. My go to razor used to be an Edwin, but now it's the Slim.

I decided to place an order for the EJ DE87 in faux ivory. I needed to order travel cases for a brush and DE for a trip I'm making next month so I decided I'd try out the EJ since the price was right and it got me to free shipping (funny how we justify purchases that way). I also was looking around eBay and found a lot of 5 vintage Gillette SS Flares and Super Speeds. The Buy it Now price was low enough so I snatched 'em up! I wanted one, maybe two new razors to try out, and now I have six on the way. The wife might hurt me when she finds out. Once I use each of these a bit I think an open comb will be the next purchase. Probably the 1904.

All of these razors that have been suggested are great. You can consider trying a single edge razor. Like a 1912 or an injector. You can also try adding a shim to one of your razors. You take an old DE blade and you snip the sharp parts off with scissors. You then put the remains of that blade below the blade you will be shaving with. It changes the angle of the blade and makes it a little more aggressive. Really cool experience.

If you go stainless steel... I would go for a Weber.

+1. Weber's are excellent razors at a very fair price. I am down to 2 razors in my rotation; The Weber and a Tech I keep around for the day after if the Weber decides to bite. Great razor, and I don't feel the need (or want) to add others since getting it.

After my order yesterday and some more research mixed with some obsessing, I decided to order a Merkur 1904/1906 OC as well. It was under $30 with free shipping from WCS. Now I have 7 new razors on their way! Damn that free shipping, gets me every time!

I like the 37C more than the 34C personally. I think you have more maneuverability with the Slant and are limited in angle variability with the 34C.
