What's new

What should my next DE be ?

I have caught the obsession and need to feed it.

I now have these 3 razors:

Merkur Classic 1904
EJ DE89L
Muhle R89

I just wanted to try something new.

thanks

Watch the B/S/T for something vintage, maybe a Super Speed, Tech or one of the Old Types.

You specifically said double edge, but I'd also suggest looking at a single edge GEM or an injector, just to expand your horizons.

How about a vintage Gillette? Maybe a Fatboy or a Slim?

I second this.
I have a Merkur Barberpole 38C, EJDE89L, Feather Portable... but i was very curious about an adjustable. I bought one on the B/S/T here. I'm really enjoying it so far. I really like the ability to adjust the aggressiveness of a shave. Having an adjustable really calmed down my RAD too... although now my eyes are turning to these brushes. :blushing:

I'd go vintage Gillette.
It's worth seeing why they are so popular.
A SS or two will do you quite nicely.
I'm on a SS Red Tip jag right now. What a beauty that is.

You don't need to spend a lot of money.
Get a Weishi off eBay, an excellent piece of high precision engineering, it rewards you with a very good shave when you get it right.
Then there is the Merkur Bakelite, is this the best razor they have ever made? And so cheap.
And everyone should have a few Techs. They cost pennies. For 50 years they are what hundreds of millions of men used.

For more money you can get a Megress and own something very special.

Beware getting into vintage Gillettes, you need about 20 razors to have a representative cross section of what they made.

Hex, You might want to try an open comb or a slant. Those should both be at least a different feeling shave. The opinions are going to be all over the place unless you have any kind of specifics to base suggestions from.

I'd hold off on the Pils or Feather unless you are ready to put the razors you have on BST due to lack of use heh. It's a fine suggestion, but they are pricey. Well made though and a joy to use.

Going vintage could be cheaper depending on the quality and how rare you get. Some good suggestions above as well.

Quite a few times actually and I think they are garbage. You can get a good quality vintage Gillette for the same price.

Sure.
I have a fairly good collection of vintage Gillettes.
But the Weishi is far more of a piece of precision engineering. It is very, very mild. But when you get the angle right it is a very effective tool.

We live in the age of Merkur and vintage Gillette. The Weiki is completely different. Keen DE shavers should try one.

Mmmmmm. Yes. I'd vote for the slim, specifically. I've spent almost the entire month with slims, trying out the Timor blades, and it's been like visiting an old friend.
