What's new

What should I buy next?

So I've hit the ground running in the last couple of weeks. As it stands now, I have:

Aftershaves: Pinaud Clubman, Pinaud Bay Rum, Old Spice

Soaps: Mama Bear's (Northwoods, Awakenings, and Phoenix Rising), VDH deluxe, and Col. Conk's Bay Rum.

Brush: VDH badger that came with set (meh.)

Mug: VDH apothecary style and an antique Old Spice mug which is on it's way to my house from e-bay land (yay!)

DE: Edwin Jagger 87 faux ivory

Blades: 5 pack of Derby, 10 pack of Feather (I'm still comparing the two to decide which I want to buy a bulk pack of)

I was thinking that I wanted one of two things for my next order (gotta buy stuff piecemeal, lest I incur the wrath of SWMBO):

1) A new brush from Whipped Dog (my VDH brush is ok but keeps shedding and I'm not in love with it).

2) A butterfly-style razor (was thinking of a Super speed...thoughts?).

What would you buy next if you had my current assortment of goods?

Yep, look around the brushes forum for ideas on another brush or two.

Many people would find those to be rather extreme examples of blades, and I would not make my choice between just those two. I suggest getting a blade sampler pack, and don't decide which one to buy in bulk until you've tried a good variety.

A Super Speed would be a great choice. I have two: a late 40s model and a flare tip. Both give excellent shaves.

Assuming I order one off eBay...what should I be on the lookout for (I'm a newb, so it wouldn't be difficult to dupe me)? What is a reasonable price range?

Thanks!

I've picked up handfuls of them for under $10 a piece and it is usually the razor I give to someone thinking about trying a DE. I'd watch the BST or check out your local antique store. If it opens and closes evenly and tightly, just make sure the bars are straight and you should be set.

I dont want to be ignorant, (I read the first post) But, what about something completely different regarding your collection? A shaving cream...

I have heard good things about Whipped Dog brushes. I have also found a couple NOS vintage brushes (Ever-Ready, Fuller, and Made Rite) on the BAY (all three were never used and are fantastic brushes).

You'll like the superspeed. You may also want to consider a Gillette Fat Handled Tech or a Gem SE.

It's been so long I can't remember what I paid for mine. But I'm pretty sure they were in the neighborhood of $10-15 including shipping.

Muhle R41. Simply awesome IMO. I am a newb still though, and I got my new Joris today, so we'll see how that changes my mind about things.

Excellent razor, but not really one for a newbie.

I disagree. It was the razor that tought me to shave. I did 10 shaves with a Merkur HD, gave up and switched to the R41. The R41 gives such good feedback that it is effortless to learn to use. Adding a bulldog handle made the control even better. I claim the R41 is a great razor for a newbie, and am living proof that it can be.
