What razors have you used?

Who has used what? For me...

I started out with an electric my parents bought me when I was, what, 12? 13? Some vibrator thing where the thing inside moves left and right and you stick hairs through a foil screen to get clipped. Braun made it.

They wanted me to shave every single frickin' day.

I smashed it with a weight. Not my weight, I don't lift; when I lift something it's 'cause it belongs somewhere else. But it was there and I decided it belonged inside the (much smaller) razor.

It was at this point dad made the mistake of coming home with Barbasol and a pack of Bic disposable 2 blade razors. YEOUCH those are harsh! Worked though.

When I taught myself to drive a stick shift in February, I guess it was like those Bics. I got a car that broke a few months later, old aging falling apart garbage Cavalier. But man, driving stick is like... everyone's afraid to learn, it's too hard, something mystical people can do. Like shaving with blades, are you friggin' nuts taking that sharp sh!* to your throat?!

And then one day there was another electric, which I ignored. This one was rotary. Eventually I tried it out and it ripped a hole in my throat; I've never had an injury beyond a tiny knick with the blades, aside from one time I went dry without lube and peeled off my cheek in a thick slab (whoops). Let's not use that much pressure ever again.

No more of that. I've used 2 more electrics and I keep finding that my face burns for 3 hours afterwards, during which time I often cry. It hurts, no really it hurts. I've had high-concentration lye on my skin and idiot telling me to wash it off with water, it burned for an hour. Electrics burn like that, but for longer. Hell with that.

I found out Gillette is really awesome when I turned 18. No joke, they sent me a Mach 3 in the mail. Later they sent me a Fusion, just because. I mean I wasn't turning 18 again but hell, here's a free razor.

I found the Mach3 amazing; but nothing compared to the Fusion. The Mach3 always got closer, but way more irritation; the Fusion got very close, less irritation. The Bics, however, got the closest, with the most abrasion. Switching to Gillette brand gel helped, it works better than foamy white Colgate/Barbasol shaving cream. Imagine that.

I've tried both in vibrating power mode too, and the vibrations make the blades glide nicely. Gillette sent me a Mach3 power or a Fusion power, I can't recall... I bought the other one too though.

Then someone mentioned they don't use Gillette's crap.

And then I found my way here.

And at 23, I got a double edge, some Derby blades, a Tweezerman brush, and some Col Conk's soap.

Now I've used a Fatboy, a Merkur open comb, Merkur slant, various blades, a straight razor(!), and I have a Shavette and a solid brass Feather RG coming. I've also used various soaps, favoriting on SCS, but VDH is very good. Eventually I'll get an injector razor, figure out how to hone my straight razor myself, then who knows.

By the way, the straight razor was predictable, but same thing as driving stick or shaving with a blade. I looked at it, and I knew it was one of those things... it brought thoughts of the amazing difficulty and impossibility of the task, but when it went to my face it was... not amazing. My car stalled when I put it in gear the first time, so did my razor. But it did move. There's nothing mystic here; it takes practice. Interestingly I broke my straight razor (dulled the blade) and need to fix it (by learning to hone).

Meanwhile, a 40 year old coworker is minding me he's been shaving his whole body for 20 years, so he has more experience and knows better than me. I have a long road ahead of me but his is longer.

So who got here, how, and why? Which of you are 40 year old men that used the same razor and canned goo every single day until 2 years ago; and which of you have touched everything, and even revisited Bics and the Mach3 with your favorite shave soap and prep? Who picked up this stuff as a hobby, and who ripped your face off with an electric and had to find something that wouldn't make you bleed?

God, what a waste of life. Somebody should have just given me a straight razor when I was 15 and been done with it.

I've used a multitude of disposable razors including Personnas, Schicks, and Gillettes. Non were very good. I used an electric when I was about sixteen, but it tore my face up something aweful. I've since moved on to a Gillette Slim, which is my everyday razor, a Bump Fighter Trac II with personna blades, and a Super Speed. I plan on trying many others.

I marched more or less the same route.
I switched to wet shaving as soon as I found out that electrics are just not for me.

Then, happily shaving for years with modern Gillette razors.
Ditched the Gillette gel for good ones, such as de Vergulde Hand and L'Oreal.

One day I found myself with an extremely expensive bunch of plastic cartridge razors and decided to take the other route.

Got myself a Muhle R106, which - even after I added a couple of more razors to the rotation - is still a favorite of mine. Also ordered Trumpers Limes, and ditched every can of gel in the house.

My initial brush was a Muhle custom one - a nice start. Then a couple of Semogues (nice) and nowadays we make our own custom brushes. Had to have the Limited Boar 2009 though ;-)

Now on a road to try and enjoy the classics. Rediscovered some Palmolive creme, Tabac and the Spanish / Portuguese shaving cremes. Proraso for the summer is great.

It's a nice journey into this world of shaving, and I do not intend to hop off early :)

So who got here, how, and why?
My road was like this:
  • Started in the 1970's with a Gillette DE razor
  • Injector razor
  • Several electric razors
  • Two blade cart
  • Three blade cart
  • Wore a full beard for many years
  • Four blade cart
  • Five blade cart
  • Back to Gillette DE razors

My first razor was a red mach 3 that I bought at 13.

Since then I have used every razor that has come out from Gillette recently, mach 3, mach 3 turbo, fusion, atra - but not a TRAC II.

I have used all of the Quattros from Schick - but no injectors or anything.

As for safety razors - I have used a Gillette Fat Handled Tech, Slim Adjustable, Old Type, Gillette New, and a Merkur 33c.

So far the slim adjustable is my faaavourite. By far.

First razor was an Atra.

Then Sensor.

Then the Schick razor that had the bendable blades.

Then M3.

Then M3 Power.

Then Fusion.

Then Fusion Power.

Then Schick quattro.

Then back to M3.

Then I found Badger and Blade.

Since then I've used: Trac II, Atra, Sensor Excel, Flare-tip Superspeed, Fat-handled Tech, Eversharp-Schick injector, Krona, Fatboy, and a Feather Portable.

I'm favoring Trac II, Atra, Sensor Excel, and Fatboy for now.

Disposable Bics
Gillette Sensor
Back to Bics
40's Super Speed (regular use almost ten years)
Gillette Tech (Tried it never regularly shaved with)
Gillette NEW (tried it never regularly shaved with)
Gillette Old Type 102A (Current daily shaver)

I will be getting a Trac II soon to try out and would like to try a New Improved.

I learned with some sort of DE razor right at the end of the era when most men still used them.

Now that I think of it, I believe that my next razor may have been a Trac II, but I'm not completely sure. At any rate, I soon switched to Atra, and was still using it up until early this year. I experimented with electrics, and I still have a Norelco around, but I never learned to like them, and always returned to the Atra.

Early this year, I started thinking about trying a Fusion, Mach III, or Quattro, and started searching on Amazon to see how much the razors and cartridges cost. That indirectly led to the discovery that you could still get DE razors and blades. I ended up buying a Weishi, a Merkur, and a Parker all at about the same time. The Weishi didn't work out that well, but the other two soon had me hooked on DE shaving. Web sites like this one helped a lot with information on equipment and techniques.

Since then, I've tried a big selection of DE razors, several SE ones, and have just been trying out Schick injectors. All of them are great, and I no longer intend to try those multiblade gizmos. I don't intend to try a straight, either, but it's more likely than trying a Fusion.

Oh yeah, I've used disposables from time to time, but only because I didn't have my regular razor with me. They've never been a go to razor for me.

When I started shaving, at about the age of 15, I had about a half dozen hairs that would grow from my chin. So on Friday night, dance night at the boy's club, I'd shave them off and hit other area's of my face with some old DE that was lying around the bathroom. Man did I get some razor burn, but it worked, I think. All I know is the AS burned me like my face was on fire. But at least I smelled good for the dance. My dad used an electric so I tried that a couple of times. It gave me worse burn that the DE did. I used this routine, the old DE for a couple of years shaving once a week until the age of 17 when I went into the Air Force. They made everyone buy the same DE at the BX, don't ask me what make it was, I think Gillette. I still shaved once a week until the TI said that I WOULD shave every day. So I shaved every day until I was out of basic training. Then I ditched the DE, dumb move I know, and started on the disposables. I used those for the next 40+ years, I liked the twin blade disposables the best.

Finally about a year ago I started doing some reading on wet shaving, and the rest is history. Since I started DE shaving I've used the HD, the barberpole HD, a couple of slants, a progress, a couple of EJ razors, and a couple of open comb razors.

As of now I've got rid of all the razors I've tried and didn't like, which leaves me with my 1904's and my HD's. Both of which I have in both safety bar and open comb.

Now I'm planning to make the jump to straights. We'll see how that goes. :w00t::w00t:

My Timeline;

Grandparents bought an electric 3 head Phillips shaver @15yo
Mach 3
Mach 3 Turbo
Fusion
34C
Superspeed
Slim

And haven't looked back. Although i wouldn't mind trying an M3 again and see how i go with the new technique

My memory has failed me on what i used long ago. However for about the last 15 years or so it was one or another of the gillette line. I know i used a sensor then a mach 3 for quite sometime and then a fusion. I have been using a DE for the last eight months. I never really had any problems with any of the gillette's but to me a DE shave is just a better way to go. Plus who wants to pay like 25 or 28 dollars retail for a pack of eight fusion blades. There was always ebay but now with DE you can pay almost nothing for blades in comparison

Started shaving in 71 or 72 with a Schick injector that belonged to my Dad. Went into the Air Force in 74 and used it for a couple years then bought whatever Gillette cartridge was around in the mid 70's. Over the years I used every cartridge system Gillette came out with, plus a couple electrics that I didn't like at all. I have been using the Fusion since it came out and hooked up to the interwebs a month or so ago to look for a cheaper alternative to the fusion. I found out about the Personna Magnum M5 through various links to slybaldguys.com, theshaveden.com and B&B. Picked up the M5 and used it a few times but was intrigued by the guys using the old DE's and injectors. In the last month I have acquired and use the 5 razors listed in my signature on my face and head.

I will never go back to the cartridges. Was in a bit of a hurry this morning to get some shopping done so I did a quick shave with minimal prep using the Schick and Neutrogena cream. I was able to do it as quickly as I could with the M5 or Fusion and my face felt great afterwards.

My MIL is pretty sure she has some really old razors that belonged to her Dad boxed up somewhere and has told me I can have them when she finds them. Looks like the arsenal may grow...

I started with Bic Disposables in High School, and transitioned to a Sensor in college. Moved briefly to a Norelco electric, then back to a Sensor. I then became an early adopter of the Mach3, with various flavors of that over the next 6 yrs or so, then a Fusion. After finding B&B, I moved to a Merkur 34G, Mergress, 48-50 Super Speed, and a nice Rooney handle for the M3. I also own a Merkur HD Slant, but have only used it once, so it barely counts.

1. Phillips Norelco Electric
2. Gillette Disposables
3. Gillette Fusion

4. Parker 22r
5. Gillette Tech

1. Norelco electric razor
2. Unmarked Gillette superspeed
3. 1956 Gillette superspeed
4. Merkur 34C
5. 1956 Gillette superspeed Red-Tip (current razor)

In the mail is a Merkur slant (37C).

Started in the 60's with my dad's red tip SuperSpeed. Then progressed to:

A Gillette Knack
Philips electric.
Another Philips electric.
Trac II
Atra/Bic disposables
Mach 3

Then I discovered B&B. Now I own and have shaved with twice as many razors in the last 6 months than I did in the previous 40+ years combined.

I started with an electric around 15.

I wised up to wet shaving in college (17yrs ago). I was a Gillette man until recently. I stared with Sensor, then moved to Sensor Excels, then Mach 3, then Fusion/Fusion Power.

About 3 weeks ago I switched to using a DE razor. I have a Parker 96r (Shark and Sharp blades), but have my eyes on a Merkur and a blade sampler.

My Dad used a Gillette brass colored take apart, so I started with that in the mid fifties. Quickly found I could bleed to death with that sucker. Sorry guys, but I never mastered it.
I found the Schick injector was much better for me and used it into the 70's along with aerosol shave cream.
After the Trac II came out, I used for awhile a battery vibrating Trac II made by Remington. About this time, I also discovered Williams shaving soap and BurmaShave brushes. While the combination left something to be desired, I began using them and trying to learn how to make lather. The internet wasn't yet available so it was trial and error, mostly error.
I eventually went to a Burma Shave razor that took a swiveling Trac II type of blade. I still use it. I also use an Atra and a Sensor. The sensor is a Gillette I customized by sawing off half of the handle and epoxing on a deer antler piece.
I have been using shaving soap and brushes since the 1980s, but didn't really branch out in my learning until discovering B and B recently. I now have about 6 zillion brushes, soaps and aftershaves. I'm not sure I shave any better but I sure have more fun! Now when the mail lady rings the doorbell, the wife doesn't bother going to the door. She just tells me to get it, knowing it is probably a package of shaving soap...

Started with a Black Handle Super Speed: mid-'70s
Injector and Trac II: '80s
Mach III then Merkur DE: '90s
Merkur DE: 2001-2005
Vintage DE: 2005-present
