What razor is this?

My brother picked this up at auction for me today. He isn't a wetshaver (in fact, Grizzly Adams describes him more) ad didt know a lot. The picture isn't great, but I thought someone here would be able to identify it.

Thanks.

frankly those blade dispensers are a better find IMO, people are always clamoring for those for some reason.

The GEM is a nice little SE razor.

That is a fabulous razor. You really owe it to yourself to pick up some SE blades from the drug store (Not hardware store!) and give that G-Bar a whirl. You will be very, very surprised!

Its a good razor, but remember its very aggressive.

Here is a great SE razor video that helped me quite a bit. I hope it might do the same for you.

I've found that the later produced Gems, namely the Featherweight, Push Button, Contour and the G-Bar to be the least aggressive Gem's made.

A 1949 ad for the GEM bullet-tip touted the gentleness of the shave. Guess they thought that the MMOC was a little too aggressive as well?

I'm going to start REALLY slowly with this one. After doing some research (and watching that video), looks like it's aggressive and there is a learning curve.

What brands of blades should I look for? Any of the DE blademakers make SE blades?

The GEM blades at Wallgreens are a good place to start.

Yep, go slow or it will eat your face. Though once you figure it out its a great shave. That and in my humble opinion it might be one of the most beautiful razors ever made. Not to mention the finish on these things is amazing, you never see them in much worse condition than the day they were produced.

The razor MrGuy used in that video is the open comb Micromatic, which is a very aggressive razor. The G-Bar is much tamer.

The Gem blades from Walgreen's' are Stainless . . . the Treet blades that I buy at Rite-Aid (also made by ASR) are carbon steel. I find the Treets to be smoother on my face when first loaded, but the edge goes bad sooner than the Gems. (I've just trashed a Gem Stainless after six shaves!)
