That looks more like a later Gillette-made Pocket Edition which would have had a standard ball-end Old Type in it (two-rivet case, printed logo in the headliner, presumably plain back to the case without the patent date/number inscription).

Does the cardboard box have a serial number stamped on the bottom of it?

Hi guys, I'm trying to determine the same thing. I recently won an auction on eBay for a similar set- floral pattern case with an old type ball end razor in it. It was item number271155164403. Could you fellows take a look and tell me if the set is correct? Thanks. By the way great score on the floral set. I just paid the same for mine and it doesn't look near that nice yet.

Yup, yours looks to be the same sort of set as this one. That razor that's with it looks like the right sort, and its condition would appear to match the other pieces pretty well. The only thing that would be a tiny bit odd is if the razor wasn't serial numbered. I'm not certain that they carried on making this set into the post-patent era (i.e., after 1921) when the Old Types would have been un-numbered.

Thank you Porter, I started a thread about this razor set a day or so ago, but it got overlooked. Although I did get referenced to a couple of threads here at the B&B about the pocket edition sets. That was some excellent input about these sets. Thanks again for confirming for me it may very well be a correct set.

All I see on the back is 503B and E292962 I think I cant really make that one out:angry:... Well shoot not sure where to go with this one is there anything else I can provide to help you guys out...

Good eye again porter.....so because it has this logo ( made in USA Known the world over) printed on and not patched/glued $P1010027.jpg

and the back of the case most likely don't have all the patent info inscribed on it....
and it has a 2 rivet type closure $9999999999999999.jpg

That E292962 would be the serial number that was on the original razor. So your set was made in 1917 and would have had a ball-end Old Type in it like the one below, not the ABC-style that Alex posted above.

Now you just have to hunt down that exact serial number to have a proper set...

Gotta love this place.. Awesome work both of you I appreciate the info.. Now who has this for sale with no cracks  Thanks alot Alex and Porter....

I think that's a 1918 serial number, so it was probably made after the American Button Company stopped making these sets, and from what I can remember reading about these sets, they came with an old type ball end razor in 1918. Do a thread search on the B&B for ABC Pocket Edition sets, and you should come up with some good input about these sets. Good luck sir.

The serial would be a late 1917 one -- 1918 started at E449208. Also, the ball-end Old Types actually started showing up in the Pocket Editions in 1914. See the ad below, for example:

So Porter or Alex I would have to find a 1917 series Old Type to match the set? Im confused here do to the serial number?
