What's new

What picks you up?

What helps you go through a rough patch in your life? Your refuge. What makes you forget everything bad in your life, if it is only for little while?

I'm going through a difficult situation right now, and what is helping me right now are two things.

1. I'm learning how to play a guitar.

2. Venture Bros. (I could watch that show forever!)

1) Reading and writing

2) Listening to favourite songs.

Hope things improve for you soon.

I also like to get outside and/or dive into learning something new. I was going through a real rough time when I learned about then started teaching anger management.

Toothpick

Needs milk and a bidet!
music and reading. I remember back in '06 during a rough time for ole Toothpick i'd spend hours reading and it really helped. For a few hours a day all I focused on was the book and it was a great help.

lately it's been music. I like to find songs that relate with what i'm thinking or going through.

"How I pick me up"
1.) it depends on how I choose to deal with it I have tons of jazz to listen to raise up my mental health so to speak.
2.) or I could give into the depression that would last for at least 3-4 weeks of music that allows me to entertain
my thoughts and feelings fueled by lots of beer, whiskey, gin. Then let it run its course( no I do not condone this option as a "magic bullitt" but it's what I know how to deal With "one of my turns" oh the strong whiskey I hold
in my mouth with the flavors rolling over in my mouth. Holding untill I swallow. That bite of whiskey burning going down. Telling me I am alive. I also like to right about stuff. This helps me. I am sorry you are going through some tough stuff. Good luck.
Sorry I wasn't much of a help.

Netflix. Either a happy comedy or some movie/documentary that really puts life into perspective and makes you realize how much you truly have. Stay away from miserable things/people because misery loves company.

The Count of Merkur Cristo

"The more relaxed you can get, the better you'll do. Issac Mizrah

I think I have to put this into two catagories. Sometimes it's good to get out and spend time with people, other times it's more about "me" time.

Socially
A nice walk with my GF in the nature preserve near my house or at my parents house in northern Arkansas.
Spending time catching up with friends at a good restaurant or pub.
Going to a White Sox game
Going to a wine tasting

Personally
Strumming my guitar
Reading a new book or listening to a new band I've just discovered.
Browsing through records/CDs at my favorite record store.
Browsing all the the new gadgets at my local Fry's electronics (yeah I know, kind of weird but I love gadgets).

In addition, as others have mentioned, a good sit-down with a book or journal really helps soothe my nerves.
It really depends on how I'm feeling though- if I'm sad, then the aforesaid things work quite well.
But if I'm angry, or otherwise frustrated, then nothing beats putting on some loud music and playing a video game. Its so easy to lose myself in a game, and when I "come back to reality," I usually feel a lot better.

I have pondered this and reflected some... my reflex is to help another person. Somehow for me it picks me up.

It might be paying a toll for myself and the car behind me. Then the guy behind me (total stranger) pulls up to pay and the cashier says it is already paid for. Fun to watch in the mirror as I drive off.

It might be an encouraging word to a mom with fussy kids behind me in line. It works every time to start talking to the kids and BOY do they clam right up. A stranger is talking to them!

Training my dogs & polishing them up for duck season boosts my spirits...so does working up some loads at my reloading bench followed by some long distance range-work.

Reading (pure escape),
Music
Podcasts- (free audio shows on itunes- usually spiritual or philosophical)
History Channel (don't ask, lol)
