What Mistura (besides SOC) Do You Recommend?

I'll admit that I wasn't thrilled with the SOC Mistura after ordering it, and asked here if it would soften after use. I did, and I now love it as one of my favorite brushes. After using it again, I wonder what other brushes I have been missing out on. I enjoy boar, find badger a bit too soft, but the mixed brush is just right. Can you folks recommend another mixed-hair brush for me to try, or should I just get another SOC Mistura?

I'm happy with my SOC mistura.
Besides Semogue I don't know any mainstream brand who makes mistura knots. I think to get an alternative you have to go to an artisan brand. The alternative may be quite expensive.

The Semogue Pegasus C7 is another alternative to the taj, Butterscotch or cherry C5 mistura but more expensive and not always available. They might have been even discontinued...

cheers

I asked ChatGPT. Here' the answer:

Beyond the Semogue Owners Club (SOC) brushes, here are some shaving brushes that feature a blend of boar and badger bristles:

AP Shave Co. Finest Badger/Boar Mix Brushes
AP Shave Co. offers a range of brushes that combine the qualities of badger and boar bristles, providing a balance between softness and backbone.

Omega mighty midget mixed, a very good small brush (and inexpensive). ($20 in ama...n)
I piffed mine. I thought both the knot and handle were terrible. The worst of badger and the worst of boar in a useless package. It was cute, though.

You should try Semogue Finest Badger. The cheapest one is the SOC Cherry with a street price of $60. It isn't any softer than a broken in Mistura and has better backbone.

As for Mistura, the Semogue knots are the only ones worth going for. There are 22mm C3s, 24mm C5s, and 26.5mm C7s. Rudy and Apshaveco have Semogue knots so you can get a custom or semi custom brush from them. I am not sure who else has them. You could also get any handle in the right size, and crack open a Semogue brush to harvest the knot.

Chat GPT, shaving lots? I know you are looking for mixed knot, but you also mention you enjoy plain old boar. If you haven’t tried some offerings from Zenith you may be missing out. As a boar fan, I’ve been really impressed by Zenith.

Apsco luxury knot is a good option.

I am in full agreement with Tathlum. I actually prefer the APSCo Luxury knot over my SOC Mistura. I had an email conversation with Andrew there, and he calls this knot Luxury because it is 70% badger to 30% boar, whereas the Maggard and the Semogue knots are 50:50, if I am remembering correctly.
This is mine, great feel, great size, and I actually used it this morning! Yup, that is a 24mm knot!!

Zenith makes mixed knots: Badger/Boar, Badger/Horse and Badger Manchurian/Silvertip mix. Don't know where you could source them currently other than order directly from the manufacturer or get lucky when one of the italian online vendors restock from time to time.

I loved it for a traveler but for the pure badger bristles being too prickly. I broke the handle drilling that knot out to replace. So I picked up a 599 and never looked back.

So, YMMV applies here.

I thought it would be a good way to try a blended knot and make a good traveler. I am glad someone eventually convinced me to try Semogue's Mistura and I will survive with a Simpson S1 or Edwin Jagger STF on the road even though they take up another cubic inch in my bag. Mistura is good, but not as good as their Finest Badger.

But yeah, it wasn't defective. I can see how someone with different tastes might like it.
