What Lather Bowl Did You Use Today

Today I used the Captain's Choice heavyweight copper lather bowl.

I bought this bowl months ago from Maggards but for whatever reason I just hadn't gotten around to trying it. I'm sometimes like that when I get anything new! Like it's "too good to use!" But today I said to myself, I better try this thing and I'm glad I did.

What a great bowl it is. I have quite a few bowls but all along my go to bowl was the Fine Accoutrements lather bowl which I always liked.. but I think this Captain's Choice bowl maybe has knocked it off the top spot after just one use.

I don't know what the secret is but it generates great lather. Maybe the surface texture of the copper combined with the circle ridges inside. I'm used to ceramic bowls with a smooth glaze and the copper seems to be a definite improvement.

Whatever way it's been designed it also seems to eliminate any brush clinking too. I like this, especially if using a good brush like Simpson you don't want to get scratched.

Another thing I notice about it.. it really seems to adjust to the temperature fast, so I'd imagine it would keep lather warm if people like that. I rinse it out with some just nicely warm tap water and you can feel the copper heating up immediately.

Seems to be a really great design. I love it. It has even exceeded my expectations! I now see what these bowls are so popular around here.

Now I'm tempted to get one of the Obsidian ones also. They look really nice from what I see. I do usually tend to opt for uncoated/unpainted items, but the Obsidian looks great in any pictures I've seen.

Wow, $349 for a lather bowl?

I'm just taking a guess & will say an error was made in the pricing. It isn't priced at $349, it is $349,000.00!
But it is certainly a lovely lather bowl.
My son made this shave bowl for me.

It's the perfect size, has lather ridges inside and looks purdy sitting on my bathroom counter.
I'm sure being made by your son, there isn't a better lather bowl in the world. Congratulations, sir on the beautiful bowl & for your wonderful son!

I got one of these too! Yours looks a little different to mine though.

I think there used to be two sizes. The regular and large. Maybe your bowl is the large size?

I got mine from Maggards. It was the only Captain's Choice ceramic one they had. It just said Captain's Choice ceramic lather bowl in gunmetal finish.

I think my bowl must be the regular size. Your bowl looks a bit wider and the sides are more straight down whereas mine are sort of convex shape.. like the bulge on side of a barrel.

I tend to prefer a larger bowl and would have got large if available but when I placed the order it was the only ones they had.

This is the same as mine:

Just while on the topic of bowls, another bowl I have, I think one of the prettiest bowls I've got, is the Hwayeon x Ko Jung lather bowl from Korea.

I read an article about it once but I can't find it again. It said how it was made in the traditional method by Korean craftsman. Some pictures of what it looks like. Of course, they all vary some, being handmade and finished products.

Maybe not to everyone's taste but personally I think it is really beautiful.

It almost looks alive.. kinda reminds me of an eye!

If they made one with fiery red tones rather than blue would be like the eye of Sauron! 😁

They're quite reasonable priced also, I think about $40-$45 or something like that. I order mine from a store in the US called "The Wet Shaving Store". I thought at the time they were to be limited but they must have kept them in production as it seems you can still get them from the Hwayeon Soap Co. website. They make a plain white one also.. but I think the coloured glaze one is best. Here is the link:

Today was my first use of a Timeless lather bowl.

My typical bowl is a Mugseco ceramic bowl received as a birthday present 2 years ago. This bowl has a thumb hole handle perfectly sized for me (I don’t want to accidentally drop the ceramic bowl). The size and shape work perfectly. It sits well in the hot sink water, neither floating too high or sinking and filling with water.

I also use (less frequently) the Captains Choice heavy copper bowl. This too is excellent and there is no danger of it slipping and breaking. It also sits well in the hot sink water.

The Timeless was bought because I have finally decided to get a travel bowl. It will be used on my upcoming trip.

The Timeless bowl is deeper than the others and with the smaller travel brushes especially will require a little more care in keeping the brush handle off the sides.

Today I lathered MdC Rose with a Rudy Vey/Shavemac 2 band silvertip knot. The lather was as expected. It felt like I needed to add more water than with the other bowls but not an issue. This bowl completely floats in the sink water unlike my other two. I believe that this will be a good travel bowl but will not replace my other two. After the trip, I may reconsider as I will have a number of days to perfect my technique for this bowl.

Great feedback on those bowls, thank you! A thumbhole, in the right place & the right size, is a marvelous addition to a lather bowl.
