What is your oldest vintage Gillette razor?

1904 PAT APL'D FOR serial #2170

dr1.JPG

1903 Double Ring Patent Applied For (pre-serial numbers). Sent to Mr. G.E. Ames of the Portland Chamber of Commerce by Gillette, perhaps to raise money. 51 were sold that year but this one was perhaps a gift. Gillette was known to send them around to prominent businessmen. Ames was an important figure in the Portland business community and helped develop the city into one of the busiest and most important ports in the country. I have seen another of these sets on B&B so Gillette sent Mr. Ames at least 2.

Knurling is a little rough, unperfected, a very early one. Handle and 20 blades for $5 on the bottom. Sales lagged and so it was reduced to 12 blades to save money, prompting Gillette to resign and move to England. Document image below notes that event.

Shaves like any thin cap old type, close, comfortable, a bit aggressive, will bite if you aren't careful.

Wow, some georgeous razor porn shown here

I am out of this contest as the oldest Gillettes sadly don’t agree with me. I prefer the slightly newer TTO Gillettes. My oldest Gillettes I think are these 1930s puppies.

1918 Single Ring. Would love to get a 1908 with a script-logo box some day.

Paired with the Roller Guard it becomes a smooth, still effective shaver.

I am no expert on dating vintage Gillette razors. If I have made any errors on these three, please bring to my attention so I can learn. :)
