What is your favorite notebook?

Trying to decide what notebook to buy my wife for Christmas to accompany her b&b LE crs rollerball pen. So, what are your favorites??

My two favorites are the Rhodia Dotpad (Orange of course) and a Japanese brand called Mnemosyne, which I picked up at JetPens.

Depends on the use. For keeping my journals, I've decided I prefer a school sized roughly 8½ x 11 notebook to the smaller sizes sold as "journals". I've settled on Clairefontaine as a better paper, anyway, than Moleskine. Just not sure if I prefer the regular ruled or the French ruled.

For a take anywhere notepad to jot stuff down in, I don't have a clear favorite yet. I'm using up a stock of adequate, but less than perfect types before I shop around for what suits me best. I've got some Rhodia 3 x 4.8 ones that have good paper, but not a lot of sheets (JetPens has a deal on a ten pack of them), some Gold Fibre ones from Staples which are pretty good with a fine dry nib, but have a lot of show through otherwise, and well, you get the idea. For paper quality you're probably not going to go far wrong with Rhodia or Clairefontaine, though, and they come in plenty of sizes.

What type of notebook are you looking for? I love Rhodia paper. I use #16 Dot pads for almost anything! I just bought a couple #16 lined and like them as well. I also have a few legal size pads that I use in my pad holder... Good paper!

I'm a Clairefontaine wire bound junky.
I was gifted several from Goulette Pen in the French ruled version.. lovely.

I'm looking for a few small journals as well as a few note pads for work. I always use a fountain pen, so good paper is a must.

I am a hugh fan of Tsubame notebooks the paper has the perfect finish, not too smooth nor to toothy. The only problem is that the only source I have found in the US is out of many of the sizes. If I am forced to make a second choice it will be one of the Midori MD offerings.

I like the Moleskine Cahier, which I made a leather cover for.

While by no means an expert, I have been trying a limited selection of various types trying to find the "perfect" ones. My interests lie in primarily two sizes, the pocket size and what I will call the journal size. For me, the prefered dimensions are 3.5" x 5.5" for pocket and 5" x 8.25" for journals. So far I have sampled Moleskine Cahiers in both sizes and Leuchtturm1917, both sizes in Jottbook and the larger size in a hard-covered notebook. I recently picked up a three-pack of Pocket Notes for comparison.

I've tried lined pages, dot-grid pages, and grid pages.

Impressions:
  • the Jottbook pocket notebook is a slight bit larger in size than the Moleskines, being 5.85" in height as compared to the Cahier at 5.5".
  • The Leuchtturm1917s have nicer covers on them than do the Moleskines. My best attempt to describe how they feel is that the 1917 has almost a vinyl feel to it vs. paper/cardboard on the Cahiers.
  • The pages in Leuchtturms are formatted nicely with page numbers on the lower corners and a place for the date in the upper corners. The Leuchtturm1917's paper seems to me to be a slightly heavier paper than used in the Moleskine, but I notice little difference in bleed-through using various inks and fountain pens. Neither show much bleed-through using an Esterbrook SJ with a 1555 Gregg (fine) nib regardless of ink color, both show bleed-through using an Esterbrook S with a 2668 medium nib. Dry time is better with the Moleskine's in my opinion.
  • I like that more pages are perforated in the Leuchtturms's as a percentage of the whole since I love making lists and tearing the pages out. The perforations themselves seem to be finer in the Moleskine, leaving a less ragged edge behind.
  • Grid pattern suits me better than dot or lined.

For me, it's come down to this:
  • I will purchase grid-pattern pocket notebooks from the Moleskine Cahier line.
  • For general lists and personal use, the Moleskine Cahier journal size, also in grid-pattern will be my choice.
  • For my work use (I'm Director of Quality Control for the company I work for and take a lot of meeting notes), the Leuchtturm1917 hard cover journal, also in grid, will be my choice. This gives me a convenient place to put the date and there are more pages per journal than in the Moleskine Cahier lines.

I will not be purchasing Pocket Note notebooks again.

As always, YMMV.

I do believe I WILL be picking up one of the new Moleskine Tolkein limited-edition journals as a Christmas present to myself. Just... cannot... resist!

I was a traditional Moleskine small notebook user until I discovered Kokuyo Campus High Grade MIO Paper Pocket Notebooks - samel size with better paper for fountain pen use.

I ended up ordering two Rhodia Webnotebooks with dot grid paper, and a 10 pack of Rhodia staple bound notebooks for work.
