What's new

What is your baseline.

You have a new product to try out. Maybe a new blade, maybe a new cream. You are going to swap one product out from your shave set up. What is your baseline set up?

Mine
EJ89L
Gillette Silver Blue
Panna Crema Vetiver
22mm Grade A TGN Brush
444 AS gel

If I had a new product to test I would swap out one of those

I've only been at this since August, so this is subject to change.

But currently:

Merkur 37C
Astra SP
Omega 49
Tabac or Stirling

I'm looking to REDUCE, not ADD new products to the experience. So far aftershaves have proven the hardest to go minimal on, but I'm working on it.

I have 2 residences, LI and NYC, so I guess I'm cheating with the minimalist badge here, but here's where I'm at:

LI
Fatboy or EJ89
Personna Meds (also finishing off the last of the Feathers which will not be replaced)
Mike's Barbershop or Tabac
Simson Duke 2
Vintage Old Spice, Bay Rum, Floids, vintage English Leather, Proraso AS, and TOBS Sandlewood

NYC
Slim or Merkur 34C
Personna Meds exclusively
Mitchell's or Tabac
Simson Classic 2
Vintage Old Spice, Bay Rum, vintage Zizanie and Musgo Real Classic

I also use Dickinson's WH before the AS religiously in each place.

Proraso Pre/Post Cream
Morris & Forndran Chief

Feather Blade
Martin De Candre Fougere
Thayers Witch Hazel
Brut

Two setups I test with products, rotating out the whatever-it-is. I didn't really know more people did this until I saw this thread, though it makes sense.

Home:
Gillette Slim on 4 first shave, then the Muhle R41 for the second
Israeli Personna Blue "Crystals" (2nd shave exclusively, unless I am testing the blade!)
FS Synthetic
VDH Luxury
Osage Rub

Travel:
As above, but
Omega 13564 travel sized boar
Arko stick in travel tube or 2" sliced off a stick and put in a little container
Whatever decant I have, but it will be an alcohol-based splash

This was my baseline but, it's going to change next week.

'59 E4 Gillette Fatboy
Gillette silver blues
2013 B&B remembering Sue
T&H Lux
T&H ultimate comfort balm

I've bought a lot of stuff and I'm getting the fb replated and giving it to my cousin for Christmas. It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I have another baseline.

Still working on my ginormous blade sampler that I still seemingly haven't made a dent in since February...

Mergress and GSBs (for now)
Thater 4125/1 two band bulb
Mikes
Thayers, Speick and Nivea ASB

No baseline, no swapping--at least not yet. Everything is in play. Obviously some products get a bit more work than others. But I am far from settling in on a basic everyday setup. I kind of hope I never do settle in. I will bored, then.

* Weber DLC + UFO Handles
* Super Iridiums
* WSP Stubby 2-band + various custom handles
* Mystic Water soaps
* Unrefined Shea Butter

Ikon Slant, Bulldog handle (recent upgrade from my Merkur Slant Sledgehammer)
Rooney 3/2 Silvertip
Feather blades
Proraso soap (not my favorite scent, but it just works so well for me -- I wish they did almond)
Thayer's Alcohol-free Witch Hazel with Aloe

EJ DE89L
Personna Lab blue
TOBS Almond or Cella (it's a tossup)
Simpson Case 1 Best
RazoRock Almond balm

When trying a new razor for the first time, I like to use a Super Iridium blade, then a Med Prep Personna as they tend to work with just about any razor. When trying a new blade, I'll use a Weber Bulldog ARC first, then a Fat Handled Tech followed by a Senator.

58' Gillette Super Speed TV Special
Feather Hi-Stainless
Kent BK2 brush
C.O. Bigelo cream
Cheap target witch hazel.
Aqua-Velva Ice Blue

Muhle R41
Feather Hi-Stainless
Muhle Silvertip Fibre synthetic
Calani Classic Havana
RazoRock Alum block
RazoRock Aftershave Splash/Wax
