What is with all the "restraint" threads?

Just an observation but I have noticed in my time here on B&B that ever so often a "restraint" thread pops up where fellow shaving enthusiasts encourage others to show restraint from one thing or another. This phenomenon has me a bit perplexed. I think most folks visiting the B&B are doing so to enjoy a hobby and share it with others. In light of the worlds economy, it is puzzling to me why anyone that can afford to purchase items would not do so for some type of group "restraint" pact. I just wanted to take a minute to make a plea to the world of wet shavers.

If you can afford it... buy it. Help get the worlds economy kick started by caving in to all you ADs. Support this hobby and the vendors that need your support.

I am not intending to make any political or controversial statement so please don't come at me with both barrels. I am merely giving some encouragement to those of us that suffer from constant shaving ADs that don't want to be part of some group of abstinence. Give in... now GO BUY SOMETHING!

This statement was meant to be in jest and in no way offensive. Have a great day B&B!

What is with all the "restraint" threads???

I'd love to answer that question for you, but I'm currently participating in the "helpful answer restraint".

All kidding aside, thanks for sharing that fresh perspective, I never thought of it that way!
Kind of like doing our part to make sure the vendors and products we love have good reason to stick around.

I've elected to restrain myself from taking offense, as it can only be taken not given! Beyond that, My wallet is my biggest gentlemanly restraint!! :-D

loL! yes but u have to admit some people do go overboard. I could see it causing problems at home, what with the economy and all. I make a bit over half of what I made 3 years ago, a mortgage on aan apt that's killing me, so times are hard for many. People need hobbies and need to be active. This will help with the ADs.

I dunno why, but for whatever reason, people tend to go crazy purchasing.
I did at one time.
This hobby is like that.
Some forums have a special section devoted to people overcoming their problems (in relation to the hobby).

For some, it can be a serious problem.

I can not wait until the time arises that my family and I can indulge in some AD's of several kinds. My wife loves photography and is looking forward to buying more gear when the money is there. I tend to buy things and then "find the money"(read go without something else that should be priority). So the Summer of Restraint has been good for me. Also, being a noob, it has been good to focus on learning what I can with fewer products. I will be branching out before long, but for now, less is more.

I agree completely though. Mama Bears and others need our support and if you can, you should.

I think the main reason these restraint threads exist is so we don't have to have an obituary thread because SWMBO gets fed up with ADs and decides to slit our throats with a straight.

What? Nobody else gets those kind of threats?

I understand and agree with your post soo much, I failed in my participating of the Summer of Gentlemanly Restraint within a humble couple of weeks!

Here's to buying more shaving swag! Cheers!

She hasn't verbalized the threat as of yet. That could be worse.

I actually get more flack for posting on here than I do the stuff I buy.

"Are you on there again?"

"Yes woman. Hey, I could be surfing porn or doing drugs or something."

I would never say that, and honey if you are here en cognito, I love you.

I'm with the OP. I do this as a hobby and something that I'm truly enjoying right now. I'll spend whatever I want and enjoy my new hobby (assuming it's ok with the wife).

I haven't heard the straight razor threat verbalized yet, but I also have resisted buying things that I wanted when I needed to hold onto the money. But the more shaving stuff I see, the harder it gets.

Um. My name is Jason, and I have AD.

Maybe it's because some people really can't afford to splurge so the threads act like a Shavers Anonymous support group. I really can't afford to splurge, but every time I need to replace something that's run out I find myself fighting the urge to buy everything in sight. It's because of the vast selection of things they haven't tried out, every time I run out of shaving cream/soap, AS splash/balm or need more blades I think to myself, "maybe I should try something new" and then I'm faced with an overwhelming selection of brands and fragrances and before I know it my shopingcart list is swelling to epic proportions. Thankfully vendors like Gary with their small sample pots have helped the situation somewhat.

I have taken the pledge to restrain myself from participating in any restraint pledges, sabbaticals, or anything similar! No offense.

+1 to the OP

Providing support for kicking ADs on this site is like holding an AA meeting in a cheap bar during happy hour. Embrace your hobby - you only go around once so you might as well enjoy it. You are only hurting your pocket book but there are many worse things. Like... boats...

If it is truly pathological, then get professional help. But I haven't seen anyone's monkey that was any bigger than mine. I don't want help... I want more stuff. It is fun.
