What's new

What is Van Der Spice?

I've been trying to find out exactly what it is and where to buy it?

Here are my theories:

1. It is a home-made version of old spice shaving soap made by milling Van Der Hagen soap and mixing in old spice cologne / after shave.

2. It is a generic version of old spice soap available at a Dollar store.

3. It's a dead germanic language meaning: Where's the Spice? (kind of like where's the beef? Van Der Fleiche?)

4. It's the street lingo the kids these days use for what you get when David Lee Roth rejoins Van Halen.

Seriously though. I want it. Sub-question: what's the best way to enjoy an original formula smelling old spice soap? Prairie creations? Mama Bear's? Van Der Spice? Shulton Old Spice cream in a tube made in India?

Thanks!

1. Melt VDH in microwave in shave bowl
2. Add in a few drops of Old Spice AS splash
3. Let sit overnight
4. Enjoy

Same concept, I added in Brut and CO Bigelow...made an amazing creation named by fellow B&B member as Van Der Brutalow

Had a menthol kick, lathered insanely.

#1 is correct, though I think a lot of people use the dollar-store Ivy Club Spice because it's perceived as being closer to the Shulton original.

Regarding your subquestion, I have both Indian OS aftershave and vintage Shulton, and I'd say they're pretty close if not identical.

EDIT: Ninja'd!

You forget the first step, which is to chop the Van Der Hagen Deluxe into small pieces. This makes the soap melt quicker, and reduce the likelihood of it burning.

Also, you should give the soap short 10 second bursts in the microwave, as it doesn't take much heat to melt it, and you really don't want to burn it.

Also, you can put it in your refrigerator to cool, if you desire to use the soap sooner.

Correct, most of us use the Ivy Club Old Spice clone (available at Family Dollar for about a $1.50) as it supposedly smells closer to the original Shulton formula.

to add the bigelow, do you also heat it to make it more liquid? i've warmed it by letting the tube sit in a sink full of hot water and it gets much more runny - very nice for winter, btw.

I picked up some "Old Spice" type FO and used it in mine. It's more P&G rather than Shulton but it's still nice.. :thumbup1:

Nah, nuked it whole. Did it in short busts, stirred with toothpick and let it sit for a few seconds between. Didn't burn, melted well.

Not really necessary, the hot liquid soap melted it plenty on its own, just stir it in.

If you want something that smells closest to original Old Spice soap, the Van Der Spice is probably not the answer, because you can still smell the Grey Flannel-esque smell of the VDH soap in there.

I would recommend the Mama Bear version.

I haven't tried the Van der Spice route as of yet, but I can confirm without hesitation that the MB Aged Spice is absolutely, indubitably nothing like Old Spice, either Shulton or P&G.
