And about how much should I pay for it? Is it any good?

Gillette Old Type.

The ball handled ones are not as hard to come by as the Single Rings, but still a great shaver, and in my opinion a great piece of history. I've paid, at most, $20 for one, with case.

Although, they could be worth more, considering what set it was from. For instance, a Khaki Set (Issued by US Army), might be worth a lot more.

Is this the razor that often has the seam on the handle cracked open? I've seen them like that.

Yessir. I have actually, a few of these Old Styles and they ALL have very small, hairline cracks from either the neck, or the where the handle attaches to the ball. One of the ones I have is completely dismantled because of a huge crack all the way down the handle.

Actually it's not a seam, just a crack in the tube from the stress induced by force-fitting the parts together. Very rarely do we find them without at least a hairline crack, with some examples split wide open from stem to stern. If there is no serial number on the razor, it was made in the 1920s and was (at that time) Gillette's low-priced razor. With all plating intact, no bent teeth, and a reasonable handle crack $15-20 is about right. Add a case, or if the razor has a serial number (before 1920) and the value goes up accordingly.

The Old Type has a bit of a learning curve (angle and pressure are critical - somewhat like a straight) and is capable of outstanding shaves with modern blades.
